Super Intelligent Or What!

Mark Sommers was what some would call a brainiac. Others preferred more derogatory terms which they were quite happy to taunt him with. The problem for them, and the good thing for Mark, was that he could quite easily ignore them.

There were others that knew most of the answers at least in one subject or other, and they were reduced to tears on more than one occasion by the jeers. As the years passed they would still know the answers but would pretend not to, that way they would not draw the unwanted attention to themselves.

Mark carried on raising his hand, giving the answers, getting full marks on all of his tests, skipping ahead a year on more than one occasion.

He had been exceptionally bright from a very young age. Even before school started he could read and do basic arithmetic. His parents although extremely wealthy, had never shown any leanings towards academic brilliance, but they took their son’s abilities for granted. Not once did they seem shocked or startled by his brilliant school reports. They were certain that he was destined for great things and he showed no signs of letting them down.

At college, Mark was by far the youngest student. That did not stop him surging ahead, racing through the course-work, and keeping his grades sky-high. It was as though he had a photographic memory. One look and all the facts seemed to soak their way instantly in to his mind; not only that but he could retrieve them instantly too.

By the time he was twenty he was phenomenally qualified, but that did not stop him. He’d not pause but carry on, reaching for the stars in more ways than one. Astrophysics, that was his chosen field, and why not. His knowledge...well, it was out of this world.

Then one day, he looked for an answer inside his mind and it did not want to show itself. Mark became flustered for up until then he’d never had to dig deeply to find it. It did makes its way to his consciousness eventually but it was an experience that left him feeling well and truly shaken.

It happened more and more frequently, and he was losing his edge, his advantage, and his confidence that had seen him through all the teasing and taunting, the bullying, was showing more than surface cracks. Mark felt literally that he was falling apart.

When the tiny message showed up, he thought that it was on the computer screen. It was strange though, that they were all running out of disk space all at the same time. The words appeared on sheets of paper and that of course was nonsense. Paper did not require disk space!

Mark rubbed at his right eye, for that appeared to be where the message appeared. It didn’t make sense, did it!

Mom,” Mark said, when he finally summoned the courage to phone his parents. “Is there something you want to tell me?”

About what, dear?” His mother did appear to be genuinely confused.

About me, Mom. The strangest thing has been happening to me and now there’s this message about ‘low disk space’. Does that make any sense to you?”

She gasped, he heard it quite clearly, but by the time she spoke her composure was almost regained. “You’d better come home straight away, Mark. We’ll get it sorted out.”

Before he disconnected from the call he quite clearly heard her shout to his father, “Do you remember where we put Mark’s manual? He needs to have a new hard disk installed.”
