Last Day

They lie in bed and stare at the whorls on the ceiling.

‘Do you want to get up first?’

‘No, you get up first.’

He gets up.

She makes the bed.

They sit at the table for breakfast.

‘You’re not eating?’

‘I’m not hungry.’

‘What is it?’

‘I don’t know. I just feel?’

‘How do you feel?’

‘Strange?’

‘What should we do?’

‘I think we should go back to bed.’

‘And wait.’

They go back to bed.

‘Do you want to go first?’

‘No, you go first.’

He fucks her.

She stares at the whorls on the ceiling.

‘Try to imagine,’ she says, softly.

She makes intimate love to him.

‘I love you,’ he groans.

‘I love you too,’ she says, softly…

‘More than you’ll ever know.’

They fall asleep in each other’s arms.

On the last day.

Ever.
