Over-Heated

Those moments when

tempers rise;

when you cut each other

down to size.

Words get heated,

pouring out

like steam from boiling

kettle’s spout.

Can’t pull back

without losing face,

you’ve entered in

an insult race.

Those words will fly

a flash of knives,

control deserted

you realize.

All you are

is seeing red

for anger flickers

in your head;

you’re quite prepared

to go and maim,

your adversary

feels the same.

But when it’s done

and red has faded

you’ll know the guilt

and feel so jaded.

Those words said

can’t be withdrawn,

it’s only now

that fact does dawn,

for once things got so

over-heated

your rational mind

was just defeated.
