A very heartwarming story told with great skill. We all had friends like Norm when we were young. I too was a son of a WW2 vet. Bullying was constant. Your story brings very golden memories for me. It is also universal as it continues forward in time to the 1960's.

Vigorous narrative, told as if the author was just reminiscing off the cuff but in fact deploying considerable skill in arousing interest; creating suspense and then giving the full works to the climax of the incident. Satisfying to see the underdog come out on top and the bullies sneak away with their tails between their legs.
