My grandma was a strange person. On your average day, she was quite normal, I mean if
you had met her on a bright sunny day, you’d call me crazy for calling her a strange
person. But whenever it rained she would zone out, sitting on a chair and staring in a
single point until it stopped. If you tried to talk to her, she’d only utter the creepiest thing
I have ever heard “They.. They are coming... They are coming when it rains...”. I was
eight years old when I first heard this, ten years have passed since then and still to this
day that sentence echoes in my head whenever it rains. I couldn’t sleep the night this
first happened. My mom told me not to pay any attention to her, and leave her be when
it rained. And I did, I let her be, for two years I completely ignored her when it rained,
but one rainy night my curiosity got to me, she was sitting on a chair in her room in the
dark, and I stood right in front of the door, I called out for her, and her response was the
same as the first time “They.. They are coming... They are coming when it rains...”, this
time tho, I didn’t run away to my mom like I did when I was eight, now I was ten, I felt
brave and all grown up, so I asked “Who? Who are they? Who is coming?”. “They are
the r...” - right before she could finish her sentence I felt something pull me away and
the door slam shut. Next thing I know my mom’s yelling at me “DIDN’T I TELL YOU
TO IGNORE YOUR GRANDMA WHEN IT RAINS? GO TO YOUR ROOM RIGHT
AWAY YOUNG MAN!”.
Then morning after that, it was bright and sunny. My mom had left for work, and I was
alone with my grandma. She was making me breakfast, my favorite – bacon and eggs.
She had a big smile on her face when she saw I had came downstairs and told me
breakfast was ready. I was still curious and asked her about the night before, her
expression changed the second I asked. I wanted to know what she was going to say the
night before. She told me to eat my breakfast and that she’ll tell me everything the day
before she passes away, the day before I turn eighteen. I asked her how could she know
when she would die, and she just told me that most people don’t, but some just do.
Now it’s day after my birthday. My grandma passed away two days ago, right after
telling me everything. She told me that “They” are “the riders”, apparently some
demonic creatures that ride lightning and come when it rains. Supposedly some witch
cursed my grandma to die the day before her only grandson turns eighteen, and for the
riders to come after me the day after my birthday. I guess that’s why she was always
zoning out when it rained, and as much as I tend not to believe in curses, my mom is
working night shift tonight, and I’ll be home alone. And to put the cherry on top on TV
they said there is going to be a big storm tonight...
