amy was standing there, in the parking lot near the ground beside her car, waiting for him. the sky was clouded and seemed to say “i’m gonna rain now!” he was at the practice for the football championship next week. she was getting frustrated. he had asked her to meet him after school. something important, he had whispered in her ears and amy had been waiting for him for over an hour now. suddenly it rained. “perfect”, she whispered to herself, “now they would have another reason to hit me. i should probably head home.” she looked at the car parked beside her. my car, she thought, the car she bought with her hard earned money, after working for four years in a cafe. after she got her license, it still took a year to own a car. of course, her so-called parents were furious about it. but she didn’t even spare a glance in that direction. every time she saw her car, she felt content. she had the confidence that nothing in the world can stop her from achieving what she truly wants. she had the feeling that she can live on her own. but they wouldn’t let her. would they?
amy got into her car and started the engine. she drove the car to the gate. she looked back. but saw no one. she felt kind of desperate. she looked back one more time, this time with a silent plea and out of the blue, she saw someone running towards her car. can it be him? he was wearing a loose t-shirt and was calling out her name but it was feebly heard in the heavy rain. oh my god, it is him! even from distance, she could see his round, handsome face. he was running very fast as if he was caught on fire. my jake. she got out of the car. when he saw her, he slowed down a bit. it was raining cats and dogs and she suddenly felt like she was gonna explode. he was the only boy on whom she had a crush on her whole life but she never told him. it happened when she was in middle school. one day she came to the school crying after a fight with her mother. out of anger, her mother pushed her. she tripped fell and hurt her knee. by the time she reached school, the bruise had swollen and she was very much in pain. but no one was there to console her. she could bear the pain. but she could not bear the loneliness and the fact that she was all alone in this world. she was sitting and crying at the far end of the playground when she felt a hand on her shoulders. it was from jake. he was smiling and he offered her, his handkerchief. she took it wiped her face and they talked. she felt safe with him that day and they became friends. but when they reached high school, he got busy with his other friends and again she was left alone. she never wanted to bother him. so she never told him that she loved him. but right now she wanted to shout for the whole world to hear that she loves him, more than anyone or anything in this world. he stopped when he reached her. his shirt was dripping wet. he fell down on his knees. he was breathing very hard. at last, he looked at her and their eyes met. her heart was beating fast and so was his. he stood up. “i’m sorry. they wouldn’t let me leave. when it rained, i ran. they’ll probably stop the practice for now as it is raining.” she didn’t hear a single word he said. all the time she was looking into his eyes.
“i thought you’ll be gone.”
“i waited for over an hour and i was gonna wait, but it rained. i thought i had to go home. otherwise, mom would have another reason to kill me.”
“yeah, i understand”
“so you wanted to tell me something?”
“yeah… i heard something about you. i wanted to know whether it was true or whether it was just another cooked up story. and if it is true, then i wanted to hear it from you”.
her hands were shaking. he heard something about her. well, it’s not the first time he had heard things. all these while he never came to her for any sort of explanation. then why now?
“what is it?”, she asked him.
“sarah told me about you.”
her heart stopped.
“what?” oh no…
“she told me that you love me. is it true?”
she felt like someone had slapped her. sarah was her best friend and no other soul on the earth beside her knew that she loved him. and now she felt betrayed. she didn’t know what to do. should i say yes or no or should i run towards the car and pretend nothing happened? what should i do? omg, i’m going crazy!
“is it true what i heard? do you love me? please tell me the truth”
“yes”, she said looking down. she couldn’t look him in the eye.
“jesus. since when amy?”
“from the very beginning”
“why didn’t you tell me this before?” she looked like she was going to break loose. at last, she looked at him and all those things that she kept locked away came out.
“i never thought it was necessary. you never needed me. i was the one who needed you. you could go on without me with your other friends. but for me? i couldn’t go on without seeing you even for a single day. i never wanted to bother you, jake. in fact, i never wanted to be a burden to anyone. anyway who would love someone like me? you were the only one with whom i felt safe. you always treated me like i'm special to you. you were my friend, my only friend, and i didn’t want to spoil our friendship. it’s the only way in which i could speak to you, as your friend.”
both of them were shivering, but neither one of them spoke. amy lowered her eyes. she tried to keep herself up and told herself not to cry. but when she looked at him again, she just couldn’t bear it anymore. she broke down. she was crying like anything. jake saw that she was crying. and he did love her. when sarah told him this, he felt like he was the happiest person in the whole world. he fell in love with her the moment he saw her. that day, she was crying for some reason and her cheeks were red, he thought that she was the most beautiful girl in the world. and now that same girl was standing before him crying, telling him that she loved him and he never bothered to understand? he moved towards her he held her in his arms. she felt his strong arms around her. a lightening stuck and he held her closer. the boy whom she loved the most in the world was standing right next to her and holding her in her arms. she felt hopeful. maybe he did love me. he held her face in his hands and looked her in the eyes. he was so serious when he said, “i want to tell you something. i…” and he paused. he took a deep breath. tell her dammit, his heart screamed. “i… the rain has stopped”. amy looked up and saw that the rain has indeed stopped.
“oh...”, amy said looking at him. but neither he nor she moved. they looked at each other they smiled. when she smiled, all he wanted was to kiss her. suddenly someone called him from behind, “jake…the rain stopped. come on, the practice is still on.”
“you coming to see the practice? afterwards, we could go for a coffee?”
“no. i should probably head home. mom, she would… you know right?
“yeah. so see you tomorrow?”
“yeah, tomorrow. bye see you”
and she started towards her car and he was going nuts. the only girl whom he ever loved confessed that she loved him and he kept mum all the time. jeez, great move genius. should i tell her now? omg, just do something before she leaves. call her. tell her to stop! omg jake, just do something!
“amy!”, he heard himself call her. she stopped her pace as if she was expecting him to call her.
“yes, jake?”
“do you remember the first time we met and talked?” amy could never ever forget that day. she nodded her head slowly.
“well, at that time, you know, i felt something. you know what it is?”
amy was puzzled. where was he going with this? she shook her head.
“no? i also had no clue about it, until now. that feeling it never went away. and i had that same feeling when i held you back there. heck, i feel it every single time i see you. your smile makes my day, amy. it always did. in every crowd, the face that my eyes search for is yours”. amy’s eyes once again welled up but this time due to immense happiness.
he took her hands and said, “i love you, amy. i always had and i always will”.
“i love you too”, amy said softly. she felt like she didn’t need anything more from her life. she felt like her life was completed. she found him. her prince charming. he tucked her hair behind her ear and once again held her face in his hands and this time, he kissed her.
“hey, jake! what the hell are you doing there? c’mon man, we’ve got only one week before the championship. c’mon already”, and their kiss was interrupted.
“jesus! i’m coming, nathan! just five more minutes” when he looked back, jake saw that amy’s face was all red and she was smiling. she said, “jake, i think i should leave. i’ll see you tomorrow”.
“yeah”, jake replied and he was blushing. amy got into the car and began driving. in the rearview mirror, she could see him waving. she didn’t feel like going home after all that has happened. she wanted to be with him, after all, he told her that he loved her. she turned the car out of the gate. suddenly, she stopped because she thought she heard jake calling her. she looked back and saw that he was at the gate. amy got out.
“everything all right jake?” she asked him.
“yeah... everything’s fine. it’s just that i wanted to tell you something else. i can’t wait until tomorrow. i don’t think i’ll be able to sleep tonight if i don’t tell you this… amy…”
and the next thing she heard was a scream. his scream. by the time she saw it, it was already late.
“noooooooooooo!”, she shouted and ran towards him.
an accident. a car hit him. he was lying there, on the ground. he was not breathing. she felt the world spinning around her. she was crying hard calling out his name. he seemed to hear her for he was saying her name. the driver got out. he was drunk.
“bloody hell. i didn’t see this guy standing there. i didn’t…”
but she wasn’t hearing anything the driver was saying. all she knew was that the love of her life was lying in front of her smeared in blood, breathing his last. he said her name one last time and he never moved again.
she went cold and suddenly, everything went blank.
