Empathy Unrestrained.

It hits you, unbidden

these thoughts,

these feelings,

with a force that sends

you reeling.

Conflicting wants,

conflicting demands,

swamping, swarming

without any warning

rendering you

completely numb.

How to assess

when the clamour hits

breaking sane thoughts

in to bits.

Focus, that’s what you need;

one voice to hear,

one set of thoughts to understand,

just to make things clear.

Struck by empathy,

leaving no path to take;

unrestrained and unbounded

it will lead you to break.

Yes, empathy is curious. You inhabit someone else's needs, want to help them on their path. But maybe that conflicts with your own path! 'Don't be a doormat,' people say!

And perhaps the other has no empathy of their own? Empathy is not the place for a one-way street.

Yep. And then there's when you get caught in the middle of an argument. You can see both sides of it, feel both lots of frustrations, and it hits with such a force that you dare not act at all.
Thanks, Adam. I've been tied up in empathy knots a lot recently.

Thank you, Sue. It can be paralyzing sometimes.

Oh my this is so relatable, especially when words being spoken are hurtful and you can't do a thing sometimes.
Love this, keep writing

I love the format you used for this poem! The scattered lines as if torn apart, unable to create one cohesive train of thought; the opposing sides of the argument with you stuck in the middle. A brilliant illustration of the struggle! Well done, Hully!
