Pit And Pendulum

The pit,

it opens up in front of me,

only blackness,

no bottom to see.

A chasm,

one so very dark,

an endless drop

where I won’t leave a mark.

can’t stay for there’s a wall,

pushing from behind,

determined that I shall fall.

There’s a pendulum,

above it does swing;

perhaps my salvation,

an escape it might bring.

But what if

my hands should slip?

I’m sweating,

could easily lose my grip.

Can I dare

to take that flying leap

that might send

me plunging to the deep?

My blood

runs cold.

Am I really

that bold?

My toes are at

the chasm’s edge,

a sheer drop

of a rocky ledge.

I shut my eyes,

can’t hesitate,

reach out my arms

and trust in fate.

Kind of dark here Hully. Kind of curious as to why you have become so dark with your writing. But nonetheless an excellent poem. Reminds me of Poe.

Dark times, Reaper! Thanks for giving this a read.

Prism Persona

Standing O and very well done! I love the imagery of this dark clock and the giant pendulum swinging back and forth! I am going to do something that another writer did on one of my posts. Don’t hate me for this, there is a spelling error. I am going to let you find it! You can thank Lonecypress for this! ;) I’m sure you’ll find it!

Okay, Prism Persona. Now I'm going to have to go and look. Thanks for letting me know and for reading too.

The hardest thing to do is trust in ourselves to see us through our struggles, but it's where the beginning of success lies. Confidence in our decisions and in our abilities takes us farther than teetering on the ledge, wondering if it's best to jump or to drop. Take the leap!
A wonderfully vividly described piece!

I have a confession to make -- it would be hard to find someone less self-confident than I am.
Thanks for giving this a read, Jeff. It was one originally written on paper but it underwent a massive change when I typed it up.

In Poe's original story the pendulum was also lethal, razor-sharp and descending. The victim is saved only by a deus ex machina. Your version is more ambiguously optimistic!

Although it maybe didn't feel like that.

I remember seeing the original, rather than reading it. The pendulum might be a positive thing -- depends what might be waiting the other side of the chasm.

Sue Harris

Excellent poem, Hully. Fall into the abyss or take a chance... what a dilemma!

It is though, isn't it, for who can tell which option will give the better outcome. Thanks, Sue.
