Pit And Pendulum

The pit,

it opens up in front of me,

only blackness,

no bottom to see.

A chasm,

one so very dark,

an endless drop

where I won’t leave a mark.

Forwards,

can’t stay for there’s a wall,

pushing from behind,

determined that I shall fall.

There’s a pendulum,

above it does swing;

perhaps my salvation,

an escape it might bring.

But what if

my hands should slip?

I’m sweating,

could easily lose my grip.

Can I dare

to take that flying leap

that might send

me plunging to the deep?

My blood

runs cold.

Am I really

that bold?

My toes are at

the chasm’s edge,

a sheer drop

of a rocky ledge.

I shut my eyes,

can’t hesitate,

reach out my arms

and trust in fate.
