It’s not easy to feel proud of a place
That keeps telling you you don’t quite belong
Just because you sound different
Means you’re a stranger.

Too much of one side yet
Not enough for the other.
A permanent in-between life
Leads to everlasting indecisiveness.

It’s not easy to love yourself
When the world doesn’t even see the truth,
Because how can you treasure a person
Who only exists in secret?

Because how can one
“Pick a side” when
Neither is accurate alone,
But a bit of both isn’t allowed?

It’s not easy to tell people who you are
When nowhere seems quite right.
Maybe it’s the split between here and there that won’t go away,
The conflicting expectations that just keep on mounting

Or maybe it’s the constant feeling
Of being a walking liminal space,
Never quite belonging anywhere.
