Parmesan

I told you we were going to be making it.” Gemma’s voice rose in exasperation.

Did you remind me this morning?” Paul was becoming equally ruffled.

What? No, how was I supposed to know that you’d forget?”

Admit it, Gemma, you forgot as well,” Paul had sensed an advantage and was not one to let it go.

No! Well, okay, it’s true. Parmesan cheese was the last thing I had on my mind first thing this morning. The thing is, what are we going to do now?”

Use cheddar?” Paul suggested.

Gemma put her head in her hand. “You can’t make a proper pizza without Parmesan.”

Do you really think they’d notice?”

I don’t ‘think’, Paul, I know. They are my parents and I can promise you, if I substitute cheddar they will smell it as soon as they come through the door.”

How long until they’re here?” Paul asked, picking up his phone.

About half an hour,” Gemma replied. “Not enough time to get to the shops and make the pizza.”

No, but we can order one!” Paul turned his back on Gemma, spoke in to his phone, then turned back to her. “They’ve promised it will be here within twenty-five minutes.”

But that’s cheating! I said I’d make one from scratch, remember.”

Look, Gem, just make sure the box is buried in the rubbish, okay. Put the oven on and take the pizza out of it. They’ll never know.”

Gemma wasn’t happy but it seemed she had no choice. “I just hope they use Parmesan cheese,” she said.
