When the News Isn't News

A free-form poem I wrote while frustrated about the state of the news here in the US...

It's not so much the words

as the meaning behind them,

written with the intent

to skew stories to agendas

that match their own,

a spin intended to deceive

those who refuse to question

and blindly follow anything

that fits their ingrained beliefs,

right or wrong doesn't exist

in this world of half-lies,

and it's a sad state of affairs

when the news isn't the news,

it's propaganda.

I really like the metaphor "when the news isn't the news, it's propaganda." The comparison between what people call news today and propaganda is a great way to describe the way media today is heavily influenced by the values of the people who actually own the media branch.

I remember when news wasn't quite so skewed, and this poem was the result of the frustration of watching what its become. Thank you for your feedback, averld, it's much appreciated!

After reading the first two lines of your poem. I was intrigued to continue reading more of what you had written. I have to say that everything you mention is true. I can relate with everything you stated in your poem.
