What should die is reanimated.

Withered flesh seeks to take from corpse . . .

What glimstick can substitute for the soft glow of the soul . . .

Lanterns raised in tribute to one who walks among the dead . . .

Statues broken and left scattered across the ground . . .

Temples left unattended.

Thieves slip through the night pilfering empty holes . . .

Ravens cry and the maggots lurch in unceremonious offerings . . .

The wise scorn while society crumbles in upon itself . . .

Mad men cry while they strive to build ruins on top of ruins . . .

What should die is reanimated.

The turning back of time, returning to things society seemed to have moved past, but they were really just lurking in the shadows. I could be way off here, but that's what this says to me. Some fantastic imagery, Jeff.

It's more about the old ways collapsing and the rich and influential who refuse to let it die - such as oil barons. But the fight to move ahead does keep many locked in the past.
I think your interpretation is a more inclusive look of the greater whole, and I'm looking through a spyglass.
Thank you for reading and for sharing!

Admirable imagery, Jeff. Love the contrast too, I like that it's open for interpretation. Well penned!

I've read some of your other poems but found myself coming back to this one. It's haunting in an odd way. Great atmosphere

Thank you very much! I do enjoy moodier poetry, and writing it is just as fun. :)

This definitely has Halloween like themes to have been published in May lol. Though, it does make me ponder like the last poem I read, about the cycles of society, near the end. The rest is just pure imagery bliss to read! I love the lantern tribute to the "one who walks among the dead," line- brilliant. :)

It might have been published in May, but I wrote it weeks, if not months earlier, so it might have been written during the fall. lol It's very much a mood piece.
Thank you for reading, Keke-bear.
