One last time, Charlie, let’s go for a walk–

Nothing too far, just a bit up the block.

Your footsteps are stumbling, yet you still tug at the lead

Always eager for another adventure, indeed!

One last time, Charlie, let me feed you lunch:

We’ve got hotdogs and hamburgers for you to munch!

Dad’s cut them up into small pieces for you

And you’ve gobbled it down before five minutes are through.

One last time, Charlie, let me brush your fur,

Make you pretty— or handsome, if that’s what you prefer!

With your fur that’s reddish on top, but white at the root,

And your chocolate-brown eyes– dang, you are cute!

One last time, Charlie, let’s watch a movie together

Like we did every summer in three-digit weather.

Curled up on your bed, ‘til the movie’s last minute

You bark at the TV and everyone in it!

One last time, Charlie, let’s go for a ride.

You can’t jump up anymore but must be lifted inside.

You don’t know why we’re crying, you love the car so!

You lick at my tears as to the vet’s office we go.

One last time, Charlie, hush, close your eyes

I love you so much, but I know that it’s time.

Snuggled up on the blanket with pillows and toys

One last time, let me hold you and whisper “good boy!”
