Time Enough

Pressure. So much pressure, all because of a clock.

A clock that somehow went and stopped.

So what!’ you say. ‘Just change the battery, put it right. It will be okay.’

And if it had happened during daylight hours you would be right, or any time before I went to bed.

But no, not a chance.

The ticking of the tock came to a stop while I was fast asleep in the sandman’s land.

Oblivious to the crime of so much stolen time.

The alarm did not ring; no, I heard not a thing but slumbered on for an extra three hours.

If it had not been for the knock on the door I could have lost an entire day.

No way can I afford to take this extra snooze, this longer nap.

I feel as though I’ve been caught in some master-mind’s trap, to set me off kilter and make me so late.

There’s just so much pressure that I simply hate.

And I’ll rush and I’ll rush and try to catch up but there’s not a chance of recovering even one of those lost minutes.

I’ll have to buy another clock and trust the batteries won’t simultaneously stop.
