Recently, Republicans have moved to bar abortion in Alabama and Georgia and the world has blown up. The girls in my year at school have taken to social media to express their horror and disgust about the situation which I greatly respect; however, I have found an issue in the large amount of discussion online. To be frank, I think the social media movements against this outrageous ban on abortion have shown how quickly people can come together to get a message across and I think that seeing such a wide variety of people trying to help and inform each other is very reassuring that society isn’t as doomed as some say it is. The reason why I find myself writing this article is not to explain the news or insult anyone’s opinion.I found myself questioning whether such a controversial topic is healthy to be discussed on social media platforms. Of course, I don’t expect everyone to suddenly drop their devices and sit down to discuss things in their local parks and restaurants, but I have seen a problem arise from such a large issue being discussed on social media. Being a teenager I find myself scrolling through instagram and snapchat a lot of time and seeing friends posting about campaigns against the ban which I can fully understand and support. However, on one evening I came across a screenshotted conversation of a boy and a girl arguing their different opinions on abortion. The boy (who was for the ban) was then bombarded with messages from multiple other students who disagreed with him; as much as I also disagree with his opinion I still found myself feeling rather bad as he simply shared his opinion with another student and was then ambushed by a group of passive aggressive students who had a contrasting opinion. After that I found myself questioning if anyone else is noticing the possible issue with all of the current activity on social media surrounding this recent ban and whether it is just a natural thing the majority don’t even notice. Will there always be such aggressive behaviour when discussing things online?
