Why Do Cats Like to Sleep with You?

Simply put, it's a show of love, trust, and affection. Like many animals, cats are vulnerable when they are asleep, and they want to be close to someone they trust. They curl up into a little cat loaf and share body heat with you, which is very comfortable for both of you. Cats can sleep up to 16 hours a day, and them sleeping with or on you is a great compliment that is equal to them purring or licking you. Let's take a look at why cats sleep with you in more detail.

Love

Cats can be independent animals but at the end of the day, they need and want your love. They miss you when you are away and will meow occasionally for your attention. This is the reason they curl up and want to sleep close to you. They might even view you as another cat, and believe it or not it is quite a healthy thing for them to do.

Warmth

In cold winters you might have noticed your cat likes to hog the heater, and that's because cats like the warmth. The cold weather gets to cats more so than dogs, so they need to huddle up next to their human to warm up. Sometimes they might even lie on top of you, between your legs or in your lap. This is adorable, and also very comfortable for your feline.

Security & Trust

Cats are guarded animals and can be quite high strung a lot of the time. You might have noticed the slightest sound can affect them. They need to feel safe and secure when they are at their most vulnerable. Your cat sleeping next to or on you is a sign of just how much they trust you.

Scent

Believe it or not, some humans can relate to this. The scent of an individual could be of great comfort to another, and cats are not exempt from possessing this quality. Other than feeling safe while enveloped in your scent, they like to knead their little paws, purr and rub on you before taking a long nap. Scent is a sensitive topic for pets and it’s used to mark territory, which brings us to the next topic.

Territory

Your cat might also think that the bed, couch, chair or even the whole house belongs to them and it is your privilege to share the vicinity. They are merely granting you permission to share their property. Instead of an insult, you can view this as an advantage; your cat trusts you enough to let you be so close to them. When they rub on you and head butt you, they are also leaving their scent on their ‘property', meaning you.

Conclusion

While many cat owners will take pleasure in their cat sleeping close to them, making sure the cat is hygienic and clean is more important. On the upside, sleeping with your cat strengthens the bond between you. Foster the relationship and cultivate the love between cat parent and your little fur child. The bottom line is, cats only want to sleep with you for positive reasons, the next step is for you to decide whether or not it’s the best choice for you to let your cat onto the bed.
