If you could get a job in any occupation, what would you do for a living?

If you could get a job in any occupation, what would you do for a living?

If I had my choice of any profession, it still would be a writer. I have my personal reasons why. Like -- I enjoy literature to the extremes, I have a good head on my shoulders, a great imagination, and I can spin and tell a good story and I have an extreme love of reading Science Fiction and Fantasy writings.

How did it start? You ask?

It started for me over thirty years ago in the fifth grade elementary school where I started producing ideas for stories and the stories themselves. I usually would be found at recess, lunch and after school always with a nose in a book, or jotting in my coveted notebook where I kept story ideas.  It had been my keen interest in reading that had shown me the way to writing. C.S. Lewis’ The Lion, the witch and the Wardrobe, was my first book in a fantasy series and it surely opened my eyes to the interest of writing as a hobby. I started isolating myself away from others, and other classes, events and sticking to myself, writing down ideas for writings. (At the dismay of the staff and classmates who noticed my withdrawal)

But, it wasn’t until seventh and eight grades in school that I was actively really banging away with stories in my off-time outside of classes for school. Usually I was found alone and isolated from the class of 91’ I found myself with at Bellbrook Junior High (in Bellbrook Ohio) that I began producing some of those stories. I had produced over fifteen stories and a few of them ended up in the school paper thanks to the devotion of a few loyal fans.  (It got me sent to the Psychologist’s couch once too often for being isolated and not interacting with anyone too…)

By Junior and Senior Year, I was on my own in school, just cruising through the classes, and devoting a lot of my time with ignoring the idiocy, and bureaucratic politics of the typical Hierarchy in school, and focusing on my interests of programming, and writing short stories for fun. I was allowed to take a typing class, a computer class in school, and a Literature/Creative Writing Class, which inevitably sealed the deal and taught me the fine tuning of my literature interest and writing.  Both were very helpful in the use of focusing on the start of my writing career. Again various pieces ended up in the school paper, which had a mixed following.

It was the college years that really made the difference for me, in which I had a small focus of fans, and a lot of time producing great works. It is during this time that I participated in two Ray Bradbury Seminars for Literature, and read one of his literature based novels “Yestermorrow”, that was used as a guideline and bible for all my future writings. A methodology I still use today.

Example of such a methodology from Bradbury is to keep a notebook with you at all times, and write down what you see that is interesting. Take the ideas at the end of the day, brainstorm it, and expand on good ones, dropping all the bad ideas. And start outlining. It is a methodology that I use constantly when I am out, or I keep my laptop with me at all times.

If it had not been for the C.S. Novel and the series in the beginning, reluctantly bought for me as a present, for a book report, I probably never would have had my eyes opened, not unleashing the full passion and interest of literature and writing come alive.  And for that book, that author, and for the fans I gained along the way through the years, you have my thanks.

Ultimately, However, I went also to Information Technology. It has been a good run and profitable, but I enjoy writing more and find it more a challenge and rewarding. I have begin to get serious after many years as a hobby and found I would like nothing more than produce a novel. Just to say I did it, and have one under my belt. I would like to be a mainstream author and thanks to the many on-line websites, I am living the dream to write and the Lit Courses in School since 8th Grade, I have enjoyed the craft with my thanks to the pro authors for their influences.
