THE BROKEN FORTRESS

She’s an inviolable tree standing still amidst the dying forest,

You depended on her, for she’s your impregnable fortress

And made her take all the burden and the responsibilities;

And fought for you through all those difficulties.

As time went by, she became what you thought she was

She changed herself and killed her emotions.

She needs to be invincible, so she wears a mask

Hides all her pain, and hurl it in the depths of the ocean.

She has kept her thoughts on a leash,

Locked in a cage, to avoid release.

Yet, behind the impenetrable wall she built,

Lies a young broken girl, fighting her demons on her own

And you, who knew nothing of what she’s going through

Never saw her struggling to escape in this stew.

You’ve always believed that she’s just fine

And so you never let her speak up her mind

And, she who loves you, far greater than

The love she left for herself, has become

The candle that guides you in the dusk

And lights your way throughout this life

And while you were walking in the light

She was slowly melting and losing to her own fight.

The pain and suffering crushed her to pieces.

And all that’s left is a damaged, broken fortress.
