His Chosen Bride. Part 1.

Every fifty years it would happen. The sky would turn black throughout the day, the winds would howl and the rains would pour. The ground would become so water-logged that the crops would fail, for there was nothing that had a chance to thrive and to grow.

The villagers would hope it was just the weather but those old enough to remember fifty years ago would shake their heads in despair. It was time and there would be no escaping His demands. He wanted a wife and he would accept nothing less than the most beautiful, the most innocent, that the village had to offer.

Should they dare to trick him, his wrath would be terrible? None could remember but the story had been handed down of the time before. The most beautiful girl was the chieftain's daughter and he refused to let her go. Let them send another girl for He would be none the wiser. Half the village was destroyed and many lives were lost before the chieftain finally submitted to the demands and let his daughter be taken.

Adele’s parents were in no way special, remarkable; they were valued as a part of the community but nothing more. No one could deny that their daughter was the most beautiful girl, seventeen years of age and very much loved.

No,” her father said, when Adele was summoned.

Her mother gripped her daughter, tears streaming down her cheeks. The woman was too upset to say a word, while Adele did not understand what the fuss was all about.

If the chieftain has summoned me, then I must go. Of course I must.” She pulled away from her mother and walked away as her father held her mother back and said, You do not understand.”

The chieftain was waiting for her, along with two of the wise-women of the village. He welcomed her into his home, then left her and the women alone together. One of the women went off to get her a drink, while the other looked at her as though measuring her up.

What for? Adele spent a moment worrying but after a few sips of the brew placed in to her hands felt relaxed, almost disconnected from the entire scene.

Drink,” said one of the women, and it sounded more like an order than a suggestion. Adele swallowed the remainder of the liquid. There was no denying that she felt dizzy, so much so that she sat down and closed her eyes.

When she eventually forced her eyes to open again, she was dressed in a long white gown and on her head was a crown of woven flowers. For a moment she felt alarmed but her eyes refused to obey her wishes; they closed and she was once again asleep.
