APEX 1

Caged.

Like an animal, she was clawing at the padded walls with her blood caked fingers, a wall that separated her from the outside world. The only name given to her, which was more like an experimental label, was Apex 1. On her body, an asylum gown was the only piece of clothing that had been torn and filthy with spatters of dried blood that was now its copper color. Her cage was more like a chamber of torment for her, and for any animal or being that stepped through the doors to her domain. The creatures and Apex 1 would fight to the death with her as the victor with either the victim dying because of a broken neck, or by their skull being continuously hammered against the floor of the enclosed battlefield. The corpses were left in her cage for her to feed on and keep as souvenirs.

The source of the violent tactics was due to isolation from food, leaving both the woman and the creatures to starve for days at a time before finally, Apex 1 and the other starving victim met in her padded room. After many years and many victories, it was now her solitude for torture and death. But her instinct to kill didn’t set in motion until she was ten years old.

Apex 1 was found by a local scientist, who specialized in the behaviors of animals, in a dark alley where the little baby girl was wrapped in a blanket and placed by a dumpster. After finding her, the scientist brought her into his hidden laboratory with multiple, windowless rooms placing her in his smallest room. He cared and nurtured her but never recommended himself as a father to her, though he went through great lengths out of his studies to care for her.

It wasn’t until the little girl became five years of age that the doctor decided to test the behavioral nature of humans. He introduced a baby gorilla to her finding that the girl wanted to play and socialize with the animal, but the gorilla bludgeoned and abused the little girl like a ragdoll. The scientist, fearing for the little girl, stepped inside the room with a pistol and shot the gorilla in the head. The scientist cared for her wounds, cleaning the blood from her body. But he placed her back into her isolated solitude to heal and once again face another creature.

Time and time again, the scientist killed the test subjects, dressing the girl’s wounds, placing Apex 1 back into her chamber, and discarded the corpses. For five years this continued and the little girl showed no signs of engaging in fights and rather at this time, was nothing more than a punching bag. But that all changed when she turned ten.

The scientist placed a wolverine inside of her chamber and watched from the small window on the door. The animal growled and snapped at the girl who sat in the far corner with no expression and no care to the creature in front of her. The wolverine drew closer and closer with saliva dripping from its mouth. When it reached her ankle, it lunged and bit down on the calf of her leg making her scream. In response, the girl shoved her finger into the eye of the animal making it whimper and release its bite.

Not caring about the wound, she quickly crawled towards the animal and grabbed its little head and started hammering it to the floor. The skull cracked and split releasing a pool of dark crimson onto the ground as the girl slammed its head. Now seeing the blood, she grabbed the wolverine’s muzzle and opened its mouth. With both hands gripping at the top and bottom of the jaw, she strained and pulled until the bottom of the mouth ripped off from the body.

The scientist, amazed by the girl’s reaction and fighting instincts, he continued throwing beast into her cage but now bigger in size. He watched as each animal fell dead onto the floor with a pool of blood surrounding their head. For ten years the scientist did this, recording the analysis of the fights along with her aggression and tactics for defeating the beasts. After those ten years he named her Apex 1.

Her aggression made her a threat and a new breed of the homo-sapien species, a breed that was lacking from today’s race. Her only objective in life and the only thing she knew how to do was kill. But the studies and the fights didn’t stop. After seeing her capabilities he added multiple animals into her domain at once along with apex predators from around the globe, and he watched as they all died at her feet.

Even now as she waited to see a fully grown grizzly bear enter the battlefield with its killer instinct reflecting in its eyes, Apex 1 sat in the corner in her torn and filthy gown with dried copper blood spattered all over it. She licked her chapped lips ready to kill again and in her eyes, the bear saw death.

The door closed and was sealed.

The bear released a blood curdling growl.

And Apex 1 launched for the kill.
