Watchers

His head was still spinning from the events that had just unfolded. One moment, it was another typical get through until 5 o’clock kind of day; the next, his world had been turned upside down.

He threw open the front door and entered the small apartment, tossing his backpack on the well-worn loveseat. The stench of old take out emanated from the sink of dirty dishes.

Grabbing the remote, he turned on the television and flipped through the channels.

There it was; the breaking news story.

At once, he knew it was over.

He jumped into action, packing a small bag and grabbing his jacket and backpack on the way out the door.

As he boarded the train, he didn’t look up. He slipped into a corner seat, doing his best to be unassuming and to avoid eye contact.

He took off his backpack and clutched it tightly to his chest. Inside, was his salvation and his destruction.

It was so easy to grab the deposit bag tucked under her arm as she locked up. It was fat with the week’s sales. She’d never catch him in those heels. Then he spotted the blinking red light over the door.
