Chapter 10

Fortisa shook the bundle.

You caused all of this trouble!  You!  Wish I never - now I have to return you and probably lose my wage.  From now on the agreement will be, half of my fee first.  Payment expected whether or not I deliver or have to return the parcel.

I know I won’t get my fee.  Never has something like this happened before!  Oh, lessons, do they ever stop?  I hate disappointing the Friors!

Fortisa rubbed the ends of the ties with her fingers.

I wonder...

Before she thought through the consequences of the impulse, she untied the strips binding the parcel.  Opening the wraps, swarthed in individual layers of wool seven polished gold coins shone before her.

“William, will you look at these!  I shouldn’t have done this.  How they shine!”

She sat cross-legged on the ground with the coins in her hands.

“I shouldn’t have done this.  I shouldn’t have opened this.  I had no right.”

She turned the coins over and over staring at their brilliance and the odd pictures on the sides of them.

“Never seen any coins like these before.  I wonder where they come from?  Does origin matter?  I broke trust, trust matters.”

She rolled them up neatly back into the wool coverings and then returned them into the leather parcel.  The strappings she knotted as tightly as she could many times over.  I won’t do this again.  No, I won’t!
