Look Away

Look away, my child, I need to rest.”

She held the infant tightly but could not keep her own eyes averted. The danger was so close but she needed to catch her breath. It was not easy to keep going, especially with the young one to carry.

She cursed them, those men. First the machines that tore down the trees, the noises that scared and the fumes that choked. So many of her fellow creatures deprived of their homes.

Now the flames, that licked and leaped, completing the destruction. There was no picking and choosing now, no careful selection. The fire just turned everything it touched in to a roaring furnace, leaving nothing more than smouldering ash in its wake.

She would have to move, could rest no more.

Don’t worry, my child. We’ll be safe soon.”

She could only hope that she sounded more convincing than she really felt.
