By the time Jake appeared, having left the kids in Ian and Tiena’s care, Sali had brought him fully up to speed on everything so far. But first things first, and he gave Tally a hug filled with dominance that said how much he’d missed him. And Tally could feel if, for himself, and it was so much clearer—it nearly made him cry, and then they were all hugging each other.

Miara kept back, letting them have their time, mind still going at the puzzle full force. She knew who she’d bet money on as to who was behind it, but one thing was clear: if Trax didn’t already know, he needed to.

Back in the kitchen, she scooped a new mugfull of tea out of the pot and leaned against the counter. Trax sometimes took  while to locate under all those layers of shielding, and it took her a good ten minutes to do so. To be fair, she’d hardly had any contact with him since coming here. He’d let her discover her own way forward. She found him in a tiny Welsh town.

We need you here, Leader. You’re not near the gate, are you?

Not really.

Then please use Aes. Are you already connected?

Not like you.

But he did have a phone, so she tapped Aes’ special app.

“Yes, Miss Miara? I hope all is well?”

“Yes, but plotiness. Can you transmat Trax to the Hotel? He has a phone, he’s in my contact list as T. He’s in Wales.”

“Entry located, tracing his device now. I’ll let you know if I can’t get a lock. May I ask what ‘plotiness’ is going on?”

“Not yet. Depends what he says. Though…I know you may not be able to answer with complete truth, but do you and HK ever work together?”

“To my knowledge, only when the Earth was destroyed for a few weeks last August, before you arrived here.”

“I do assume there are things you’d have told other me, but I think you’d tell me if it became relevant.”

“Then I suspect you know I’m not going to comment on that.”

“I know. We’ll get there. Seems to be one thing I’m patient about.”

“I have located Trax, and will transport him momentarily.”

“Okay, great. Thanks.”

“Anytime. I don’t know what’s going on, but I hope things go well.”

She closed the app, draining the rest of her tea. Hopefully Trax had some answers. But he wouldn’t want to reveal himself in the dorm.

As she suspected, he waited in the Atrium, in the thick of the trees, where no one would interfere.

“What’s going on?”

“How much do you know about Eiry and her bond group?”

“Not much. Why?”

She gave him the information in a tight beam, and let him digest it a moment.

“That is a fine line, I agree.”

“She always knows exactly how far to go.”

“What do you know?”

“Very little. But she is working on something, and it’s important.”

“Then she needs to be forthright, for once. We need to know what we’re supposed to do, so we can train or prepare properly, whatever it is. As a group, not just to me. You need to make sure she does that,” Miara finished, making herself quite plan that things couldn’t go on without that happening.

He looked at her a minute, then nodded.
