Ultra-wave communication between the upper and lower rear control pods had now broken down completely. The personnel in the upper pod still had full vision and audio readout relayed from the front environment scanners but they were no longer able to route the filtered and processed data down to the neural-compute team in the lower unit. As a consequence, the interplanetary survey team’s surface reconnaissance craft was now veering perilously close to the train standing on Track 1 at Grand Central. The engineers on Europa had spent one hundred orbital periods perfecting the research vessel so that its outer integuments gave it the appearance of one of the indigenous life forms, and their control pods were skilfully fashioned to resemble two of their travel accessories. And now, all because of the 150 decibel sonic emissions arising from the station Tannoy, the centimetre-high Europans’ exploration of orb 3 in the Sol system looked set to fail.
