Dancing with a Stranger

She is perched high on the edge of her bar stool, her fingers tracing the droplets of condensation running down the side of her glass. She can feel eyes on her from different directions of the bar. The rhythm of the music is pulsing through her body, though she's not ready to act on it yet. Overwhelming heat from the bar is enveloping her in an almost suffocating blanket. Feeling people brushing against her back as they make their way in swarms to and from the dance floor lets her know the bar is beginning to fill up nicely. Crossing her legs she absentmindedly stirs the ice in her drink with the small black straw this particular bar like to hand out to everyone.

She is waiting for him. She first spotted him over a month ago and found herself returning most nights in the hope of seeing him again. Not knowing anything about him including his name didn't seem to put her off. Her best friend tried to tell her how nuts it was to linger around a bar alone in a foreign country waiting for someone she doesn't know, especially as their traveling was almost over. They would be heading home to L.A tomorrow afternoon.

Spending the best part of 6 months in Barcelona had been good for her. Her life had crumbled in a matter of days before she convinced her best friend of 14 years to pack a bag and meet her at the airport. Shaking her head she wanted all thoughts of her life before she left erased from her mind. Taking a long drink from her glass she relished the feeling of the cool liquid sliding down her throat.

Scanning the club her ardor dampened slightly. Turning back to the bartender she began to raise her finger to order another drink when a burly gentleman leaned over her beckoning the barman over.

"Two whiskeys, neat" Quickly glancing towards her he added "and whatever Miss would like". His tone was very deep and he had intense Spanish enunciation.

"Oh, that's very thoughtful but I have a drink and I'm just waiting on some friends" She was getting used to unwanted attention from the men in this bar. How was she supposed to tell them she was waiting on someone who may never show up again? She would surely sound like a stalker.

As she turned her head to smile at the kind offer she couldn't help but glance over his shoulder and her heart froze mid beat. He was here. He was walking through the crowd oozing confidence, shaking hands and receiving plenty of pats on his back as he made his way to the bar. She had the vague sense that Mr 2 Whiskeys were still mumbling something as he retreated with his drinks in his hands. She didn't know a great deal of Spanish but knew enough to know "Tienes la Cara Como Una Nevera Por Detrás" was not something she should thank him for.

Turning back to her drink she downed the rest of the liquid hoping for a boost of Dutch courage. The bartender saw this and swiftly replaced her glass with a fresh gin and tonic and a wink. He knew exactly what she was here for. Giving the bartender a shy smile and a nod of thanks she handed over money for the drink and a few euros for the bartender's tip jar.

This was it. All her waiting had paid off. She slipped off of the barstool and took her drink with her, making her way to the ladies to check herself over in the mirror. The crowd seemed to part like the ocean allowing her easy access to the ladies' room. Once inside she powdered her face and topped up her mascara and red lipstick. Her chocolate waves were still intact around her face and stopped just above her breasts. A few sprits of perfume and she was as ready as she would ever be. Now she just needed to grab his attention.

Fizzing and swirling sensations in her stomach made it difficult to decide if she was extremely excited or utterly nervous. Pushing all those thoughts to the back of her mind she locked her eyes onto the side of his beautiful face and made confident strides towards him. She reached him and squeezed herself between him and his associate. She looked deep into his eyes and finished her drink, placing her glass on the bar and taking his hand. He raised one eyebrow with a slight smirk appearing on his face. She didn't wait for him to speak to her she just pulled him towards the centre of the dance floor, which he obliged, saving her the embarrassment of rejection.

As they reached the centre of the floor the sensual sound of earned it by The Weekend began playing over the booming speakers. Her hips started to sway in time with the beat and to her shock, his hands were on her as soon as she started swaying, pressing himseld against her back and moving with her. The heat in the club seemed to skyrocket. Her dress flowed around her legs as the pair moved together on the floor. He leaned in close and whispered "Bella Nina" into her ear which she knew meant a beautiful girl. She felt her skin become sticky with the sweat which was forming between them. As the song came to an end he grabbed her hand and pulled her towards the outdoor patio towards the front of the bar.

The warm air did nothing to alleviate the heat between the two of them as they reached a quieter area of the patio. Before he could say another word she leaned up and kissed him deeply. As she pulled back the shock on his face was quickly replaced with something else, something darker.

"Who are you" He questioned as his hand slowly rose to caress her face.

"No one important" His confusion multiplied at her answer.

"What is going on?!" He questioned her, his smooth like honey voice pitched up ever so slightly at the end of the question.

She stepped back from the handsome man and raised her hand to hail a taxi. As she climbed into the taxi and rolled her window down she stuck her head out and raised her voice to ensure he heard her "Just enjoying my last night in Barcelona, dancing with a stranger". With that, she blew him a kiss and her taxi drove off into the night.
