"Billy, wake up sleepyhead! We have to catch the train!"

The train? The Meadowlark! I jump out of bed and follow Mommy downstairs for breakfast where Auntie complains about why See'n'Eye makes them get up so early for their one train to Chicago.

At the station, Mommy yawns.

"Watch Mommy! It'll blow its horn at the crossing!" And does.

On the train I call out the stations along with the conductor,  "West Frankfort!" "Benton!" He smiles at me.

I stare fascinated at all the towns, farms, and fields whizzing by. "Mommy, see the cows?" But Mommy's asleep.

In Chicago we get on the 'levated and I stare at the tall buildings rushing by. And the years rush by changing me into Bill, then William.

Now I board Japan's Shinkansen bullet train and relax in my luxurious seat in the first-class 'Green Car' as befits a Full Professor of English at a prestigious university in Kyoto going to a linguistics conference in Tokyo. This train will speed me three times faster the same distance as the Meadowlark .

But the excitement, the fascination, the sheer wonder of riding on such amazing trains died with Billy.
