On The Road At Night

So maybe it was kind of stupid, but it was an ambition that I’d had from when I was a child. Of course it could be argued that approaching forty years of age I should have had a bit more sense. It didn’t work like that, not for me.

It was now or never!

I’d drawn up plans years ago. Not one pair of eyes other than my own had seen them. It was time now to get them out, get building. I had everything I needed, and it would not take more than a couple of hours to put the things together.

It was dark by the time I made my way out on to the road. Some of my neighbors were still up and about. There was no rush; I could afford to sit and wait.

Better to be patient than have someone watching, especially if it went wrong.

I ducked out of sight when I head an approaching engine. I could only hope that no one saw me for I’d have certainly looked suspicious.

I waited for the lights in the houses to be extinguished, for the last of the drapes to be pulled across. It was silent; not a sound could be heard.

I struggled to get the contraption on my back. It wasn’t heavy, not at all, but it was awkward – at least until I had the straps secured around my shoulders, my wrists.

Feeling embarrassed at first, I stretched out my arms to the sides and I ran, spreading my man-made wings. I would fly!

Perhaps it is nothing more than wishful thinking but I swear my feet left the ground, if only for one second.
