A poem I wrote for my daughter when she turned 18. When she was born, she was premature and was so small I could hold her on my palm.

The cries of your birth will not be delayed

So fragile and small in my arms you lay

You could burst like a bubble with my gentle embrace

And yet calm a dragon with your beautiful face

The songs of new life have brought me tears

With rhythms that only my soul can hear

A brand-new creation to understand

The miracle that fits on the palm of my hand

Butterflies flutter above your hair

Excitement that only you and God share

Wonders that only a child can dream

Are carried on fairy-like wings of spring

Running and shouting with squeals of glee

Cradles my heart in moments like these

You’re a shaper of memories when you’re at this age

You’re the author of moments who writes the next page

Your face, so angelic – the angels have sung

Sweet wine on your lips, the host on your tongue

A circle of love has graced this reunion

With the Spirit of God – Your First Holy Communion

You rest on your knees, you bow down and pray

You drink from the swells of heaven today

Your wings come to life on this moment of praise

And let yourself fall on the currents of faith

As my future arrives and meets with my past

I’m swept by the river of time gone too fast

So many moments that just slip away

It’s time to slow down and live for today

It’s just not enough when memories form

It’s who you are with when moments are born

The light from your spirit that shines in my heart

Will not fade away, will never grow dark

Now you’re grown up and it makes me weep

My little girl with your chipmunk cheeks

From the flutter of wings to the flutter of hearts

Your prince will arrive, you will soon depart

We planted the seed in the light of His Glory

Now you’re the blossom unfolding before me

The gift of your spirit flows like a breeze

What more can I ask for? Just a moment, please.
