Solentville Tales Chapter 12 - The burnt body mystery
The police arrived on the scene along with a home office pathologist. There were many shocked and bewildered faces who had not expected this unfortunate twist of events to occur when all they had expected was to have some fun, excitement and entertainment.

First of all there needed to be an examination of the corpse which conducted within the confines of a freshly erected tent to prevent any vital evidence being contaminated.

The police at the scene lead by the Detective in charge would then request information and personal accounts from the many eyewitnesses present. It might be possible that a witness might have seen someone acting in a suspicious manner prior to the bonfire being lit.

The police investigation was being lead by Detective Paul Singleton he started his interviewing with Jack as he had discovered the body.

Detective- Right sir we'll start our investigation with your account. How did you become aware that there might be a body concealed within the bonfire and at what point did you raise the alarm?.

Jack- Oh right ! I was just about to toast a marshmallow over the hot flames when I became aware of this dreadful odour which had filled the air where the main punters were gathered.
The smell which I can only describe as singed flesh or a very bad case of foot odour.

Detective- I see and when did you make your discovery known to the organisers?.

Jack- I guess immediately, there wasn't much time for debate,I just yanked the plastic bag out of the bonfire after discovering the protruding hand at the base of the fire,it's a nasty business if you ask me.

Detective- Yes quite, right now I want you to tell me about your recollection of the events which lead up to the bonfire.

Did you see or hear anything that might be connected to the discovery of this body?,we know that someone here must have seen something suspicious or perhaps the person who committed this grisly crime might still be at the scene of this crime.

Jack- No sir I can't say I did but I guess you will have to speak with all of those present and get their accounts of the nights events.

Detective- We will sir and thank you very much for taking time out to assist us with our investigation.

Meanwhile Jan decided to do a spot of detective work herself as she began to perform a roll call on those who were invited to the event.Perhaps if someone had slipped away during the evening the detective could then narrow down the field of suspects.

It was a considerable task and Kate also decided to lend a hand.Together they decided that the best way to conduct this roll call without causing alarm would be simply to circulate and offer people a hot drink and maybe a blanket.

A short time after they had concluded this roll call they discovered that only two people were unaccounted for namely Tom and Ken.Neither were present at the bonfire during the police investigation but had been there at the time of the alarm being raised.

Jan decided to notify the Police of these findings and an officer appeared to be extremely grateful for this new information.

The field officers then began a search for the two men with dogs and a search light, they were told to look for footprints which might appear off the beaten track.

The search was to begin Immediately and might not be concluded until the early hours of the following morning depending on how speedy the progress of finding these men was.

Meanwhile the detective had now approached most of the party and had written down all of their accounts of the evenings events.

He was more than happy to allow all of the folk present to return home to their respective families  whilst continuing his and the forces avenue of enquiries.

It was just after midnight local time,a deathly silence had fallen over Solentville, the police had now returned to their temporary base in the centre of this local hamlet setting up a mobile office at their temporary home.

Several police constables would stay on watch to prevent anyone interfering with their enquiries and subsequent investigation. They would also keep a vigilance in case any suspects might return to the scene of their crime.

A Surveillance camera had just been set up to cover the area around the front of the mobile office which was situated on the actual site where the bonfire had been lit.

Security lights had also been installed to track any unexpected noise disturbances which might occur within a few feet of the building.

The day was over for the folk of Solentville and sleep was the only sensible option for most apart from maybe the one who committed this murder,he or she might not gain restful sleep due to a possible guilty conscious that person might have a restless night.

The police knew it was a tight nit community which is why they asked people to keep a keen eye on their neighbours and local community members but also to look out for their nearest and dearest.

There was no doubt what had occurred and that there was a murderer at large.

Even without a pathologists report or confirmation of the cause of death the way the body had been concealed and wrapped in black bin bags was enough evidence to prove that a callous act had occurred.

Jan bad a most restless nights sleep,if it wasn't bad enough that she had witnessed Tom cheating on her during the previous afternoon now she had to consider that he might be a suspect in this murder investigation.

The following morning Jan awoke to the sound of her telephone ringing,it was the police and they had received a huge breakthrough in their police hunt.

Detective- Hello Madame I do hope that I haven't caught you at a bad time,I'll come right to the point. We know who the victim was and his connection to the local area,we also know his business and this is the really hard part.

I'm afraid i am going to have to ask you to come down to the station to answer a few questions as you and your friend Polly DuPont arranged the invitation list.

Jan- Oh right who is the victim?,is Tom my husband in Involved in this matter?,he didn't come home last night.

Detective- We will talk soon about the whole matter though I am not privy to answer all of your questions as the case is strictly confidential. All that I will say is that we are very close to making an arrest.

The pathologists are doing DNA tests on the fibres found on the victim. What I will confirm is that we can discount anyone from your immediate family being involved right now.

However we do need you to identify a photo which we believe to be that of the deceased.

Jan- I see, is the victim really that disfigured?.

Detective- I'm afraid so Madame, his face was practically burnt off,we had to identify him by his dental records but as of yet I am unable to disclose the victim's name.

Jan- Ok I'm on my way now can you give me a fixed appointment time when I could see you?.

Detective- No it's ok Madame just pop down at your own convenience, the duty officer will inform me of your presence I'm going to be based here for the rest of the day or until we receive the laboratory results.

Jan was now becoming apprehensive about her impending visit to the local Police station and had decided to ask if her friend Polly minded accompanying her as it might be quite an ordeal.Luckily she was free to do so and went along.

They arrived to find the detective in attendance at the front reception and he immediately asked them both to come through to his interviewing room.

There then began a chat between two officers before the detective began to advise Jan of her rights, this came as a total shock to Jan and she began to worry where this was all leading.

Detective- Now take it easy Madame,I'm presuming that you will want to arrange for your solicitor to be present or would you prefer a duty solicitor?.

Jan- What's going on here?,I only agreed to come down here to help you identify a photo of the deceased, you can't keep me here.

Detective- Now what will it be Mrs Devereaux,do you need to arrange for your brief to be present?.
We are going to conduct an audio interview in 5 minutes time so I need to know whether we can proceed with or without legal representation.

Jan- I demand to speak to my solicitor, this is outrageous,Polly could you make a call to Gerald?.

Polly- Well I suppose so,officer would you be so kind as to permit me to make a call?.

Detective- Yes of course please allow me to show you the way out,you are free to leave whenever you please.

Polly- Well that is a relief, why are you interviewing Jan?,surely there must be some misunderstanding, she wouldn't hurt a fly.

Detective- Well the thing is we have reason to believe that it's her husbands body that's lying in the morgue.

Polly- You don't mean it's Tom,surely not?

Detective- No we are pretty sure it's him but we didn't have this information at hand until 5 minutes after we had spoken to her so it would appear that we have asked her to attend the station under false pretences.

We found her husbands ID card and wallet on the victim not to mention a piece of jewellery belonging to Mrs Devereaux.

Polly- I see this does truly sound awful whatever next will unfold?,oh I can't seem to get a signal here.

Detective- Allow me Madame

Polly- Oh thanks,hi Gerald is that you?,I say would it be at all possible for you to come down to the local police station right now,Jan needs your help pronto as she's in a bit of a jam.

I can't say too much but she might need some legal advice and representation could you help her? Or should we find her a new solicitor?.

Gerald- Oh is it to do with that awful business from last night?,I'll get on to it see you around midday.

Polly immediately placed her mobile in to her handbag and returned to the station reception area sitting down and contemplating these new shocking developments which had unfolded. She was pale in completion as she sat there deep in thought.

An officer offered her a drink but she was miles away, how would this new development impact on her friend, was she really a suspect and was Tom really dead?.Surely there had to be some mistake all would be revealed once the police interview got underway.
