Solentville Tales Chapter 21 - Jan,Tom and Leo unite in emotional reunion

The rain was beginning to lash down hard as both Tom and Leo embraced each other for dear life.Neither of them could quite believe how fortune had smiled on the two of them.

A few moments later they were heading for the safe haven and dry sanctuary of an awaiting ambulance.

Tom had made the call earlier to the emergency services once he was re-united with Leo,the ambulance driver had to negotiate some tricky conditions on the road and had to drive with due care.

Many of the streets through Southampton were more than 2 feet under water, the city looked like it had been hit by an almighty typhoon transforming it in to a sort of Venetian landscape.

-

Tom- Thank goodness you're safe Leo I was fearing the worst and that we had lost you both in the same day.

Leo- what do you mean dad, how's Lynn did she make it to hospital in one piece?.

Tom- Calm down son,I'll answer your question in good time we need to get you checked out first to ensure that you aren't suffering from hypothermia with you being out in The Solent for such a long time.

Here let me give you a hand with this body insulating foil,it should help to regulate your body temperature.

Leo- Dad I need to know what happened to Lynn !!!!!!!!,what aren't you telling me?,she didn't make it right?.

Tom- Look here we are,you know your mother has been worried sick about you,I'm sure everything will be just fine.

-

Eventually the ambulance arrived at The A&E car park entrance, soon Tom and Leo were on their way to reception where Leo could be checked out after submitting his personal details to an awaiting nurse.

It was normal procedure to have a parent present with their offspring whilst awaiting an examination when the minor was under a certain age.

Medical records were imperative and the parents would need to provide an ID which would contain all of the recent information relating to the medical history of the patient.

The hospital authorities would need to be aware of prescribed drugs or medication taken by the individual not to mention a history of illnesses that might have afflicted the patient.

Tom was just about to call Jan when he noticed a prohibiting sign which warned visitors not to use mobile devices within the hospital and it's grounds.

Leo had been transferred by wheelchair to a nearby room which was quickly filling up with casualties,he knew that he might be in for a bit of a wait before he would be able to speak with a. Nurse or a health worker.

Luckily for him the paramedics  who had brought him in via the ambulance quickly recognised his condition and the seriousness of his injuries promoting him to be seen much quicker.

Tom had finally been able to establish contact with Jan via a payphone and she was now making her way towards the A&E department.

-

Tom- Jan how are you?

Jan- how do you think I am? Tom I feel devastated, grief stricken.I've just lost my only daughter and now you tell me Leo is alive by the skin of his teeth,I want to see him, lead the way.

Tom- Easy Jan let them do their tests, look there he is,can you see him through the ward curtains?.

Jan- Yes oh my goodness,my poor little boy how could all of this have happened to our family?,so much pain and tragedy it's too much to bear for one day.

I can't even begin to think about arranging Lynn's funeral it's too much to bear.

Tom- There there !!!!! Jan come here love, you have a good cry and let all of your emotion out we'll get through this together I promise.

Doctor- Hello are you Mr and Mrs Devereaux?

Tom- Yes what is it doc,is he going to be alright?.

Jan- Come on level with us what aren't you telling us?.

Doctor- Well physically he seems to be in reasonable health,he was fortunate that you rescued him before he might have passed out with hypothermia.

He remembers very little of the incident when he was tossed overboard from his yacht but this is obviously what happened to him.

I'm afraid he's very traumatised with this experience and having lost his sister I am concerned for his mental state.

Tom- I understand completely but I haven't told him about Lynn and it does appear that he remembers her being rescued but where was he when that was happening?.It's a miracle that he's alive I still can't believe it.

Doctor- Well that's what I thought too,it's quite amazing how much punishment a young man's body can stand isn't it?.

We will need to keep him in overnight for more tests and to observe how he responds to medication but there isn't a lot more I can add to that right now.

Jan- Can I see him doctor?.

Doctor- Yes of course please come this way.

Jan- Darling !!!!!!!! I can't believe it I'm so relieved to see that you are safe, let me give you a love.

Leo- Mum it's ok I'm a big boy now you don't have to smother me with kisses.

Jan- I was only showing you how much I care about you darling now give your old mum a hug.

Tom- Right Jan I think we had better be heading off home don't you?,there's not much else we can do here right now.we will pop back tomorrow morning,I need a stiff drink and a warm bed.

-

Both Tom and Jan made their way out of the hospital rather tearfully but relieved  that one of their  children had survived this terrible ordeal.

Jan's mother Kate had also managed to join up with them after she had visited her dying sister on another ward.

The Devereaux household spent the entire evening in complete silence as all three of them stared  in to the abyss.darkness had descended upon Solentville and with it an air of despondency and apprehension had gripped the local community.

When Tom had parked the family car on the driveway he noticed that there were many roof tiles scattered about, these had probably been blown off by the prevailing winds. He also noticed that the chimney pot was cracked on the roof and listing rather precariously.

He decided that he would perform the necessary repairs in the morning weather permitting, the forecasted driving rains might cause a leak which might result in water leakages occurring in the living room.

All three of them had lost their appetite and were just numb with shock, nobody had spoken on the way home.

Suddenly Jan realised that Liam bad not been informed about the sudden loss of his fiancée.
She looked at Tom with horror in her eyes covering her mouth before shortly making her way to the phone.

Tom- What is it love, what's the matter?.

Jan- it's Liam he hasn't been told about Lynn's death and he has a right to know, how could it have slipped our mind?,we were too wrapped up in our own grief to realise I had better tell him sooner rather than later.

Tom- No Jan you're still in shock let me handle it,I'll call him what's his mobile number?.

Jan- Look it's on page 2 of the address book 07804703171.

Tom- Liam is that you?,I say make yourself comfortable there's no easy way to say this.it's about Lynn she died a few hours ago in theatre from her injuries sustained during an accident during the regatta race.

They tried desperately to save her but to no avail,I'm afraid she suffered complications and her injuries were just too severe for her to survive.

Liam- Oh my lord !!!! Why wasn't I informed earlier?,I have a right to know, this is devastating news I can't believe it.We were supposed to be getting married on 25th March.

Tom- If you need anything Liam just let me know we'll be in touch with regards to the funeral arrangements.

Liam- I don't want to be on my own right now can I stay over at your place tonight?.

Tom- Sure no problem I'll pick you up in 20 minutes or so,just sit tight ok bye.

Jan- How did he take it Tom?,I know that's a stupid question,I'm really worried about the impact emotional stress can have on an individual.I'll just prepare the study and make a bed up for tonight.

-

Tom departed soon after making his way to his car,the driving rain and severe winds would make his journey rather precarious to say the least.

There was evidence of structural damage everywhere he looked.Trees and telephone lines were down and was now getting concerned that he might not make it back home alive given the hazardous driving conditions.

It was only a short distance from "Hamble On Le Rice" to nearby Solentville driving via Netley which was close to the river Hamble.

The road leading up to Liam's house appeared to be flooded as Tom's car came to a halt.
He decided to step outside and see how deep the water was but no sooner had he got our he was shocked to discover that the water came up to his chest.

By now the family car was beginning to fill up with filthy river water as he vainly attempted to close the driver door.

Suddenly from nowhere he and the car were being pulled down stream by a terrible current.
What used to be a road now resembled a wild river.

Tom was trying to hold on to anything for dear life as the force of nature began to pull his body towards an enormous waterfall which would eventually deposit him and his car in to the main part of an already swollen River Hamble.
