Solentville Tales - Chapter 4 - Love,rage and a million tears

Tom returned to the yard following his afternoon's assignation with Jan feeling pleased with his afternoon's progress.

He was however still concerned that his family had been caught up in the economic decline and the imminent collapse of Jan's business.

This would have huge repercussions and would cause problems for the Devereaux family.

He parked up in the yard's car park and noticed that his business partner Jack was talking to Bill who was the shop steward for all of the employees on the site.

He decided that his discussions with Jack would have to wait whilst he got his head around the financial circumstances which had placed the business in peril.

He would not manage to avoid Jack for long however as he was making a beeline for the office.

Jack- Hello Tom nice of you to show your face this afternoon, good night was it?.

Tom- Now look here Jack there's no place for sarcasm we've got a real cash flow problem on our hands here, are these the only orders we have received in the last few months?.

Jack- I'm afraid so Tom,there's no getting away from the fact with you coming on board it has brought us nothing but bad luck to the yard.

Tom- I don't remember you having any objections to cashing my cheque though Jack.

Jack- Alright let's have another look at the books, how are we doing financially are we still going to be solvent in a few months time if the orders completely dry up?.

Tom- Well with my Investment it sorted out a few of the long standing debts and provided us with a little working capital.

However if we don't start landing orders in the next few weeks then I'm afraid we will have to start looking at redundancies.
Perhaps we might consider introducing a 3 day week or asking people to go part time.

Jack- Now come on Tom it can't be all that bad surely?

Their conversation was temporarily interrupted by the sound of the phone ringing,it was Jan and by the sound of her tone she seemed to be in a hell of a state.

Jan- Tom it's Leo he's in hospital apparently he's had an accident and quite a fall whilst he was out with friends. They were trying to scale some rocks in Bitterne when he lost his footing,I think he had broken his collar bone. Can you come to the general hospital I'm just approaching Shirley High street.

Tom- Well yes I suppose so

Jack- Of course you must go Tom get yourself down there, family health should always come first.

Tom- Sorry Jan I will be with you in about 20 minutes depending on traffic,Jack is ok about it,I'll make up the time at the yard by working over tonight as we need to sort out a few financial issues here.

How's your mum and is Lynn flying over from the States?,I hear she's just got engaged to some guy what's he like?

Jan- In due course Tom let's just get over this crisis first then we'll talk.

Tom didn't hang about to say goodbye to Jack as he drove like a man on a mission towards the local hospital.Luckily he remembered to bring his mobile phone with him in case he needed to get in touch with Jan before his arrival.

The journey went without a hitch as he approached the hospital car park as he noticed Jan was standing at the main entrance to the accident and emergency department. She waved at him briefly before making her way over to him.

Tom- What news Jan is he conscious?.

Jan- Yes he's just come out of theatre having had a minor operation. He still feels groggy but is up to receiving visitors which is good news.

Tom- Right then lead the way

Jan- On another subject the bank has finally acted on their threat to call in my loan and I have had to put all of boutiques up for sale.Tom there is no other alternative I simply need too much money to meet my financial obligations.

Tom- How much exactly?

Jan- About a quarter of a million quid, now where am I going to find that kind of money without strings being attached?.

Tom- Oh dear that is grim news indeed, here we are oh he doesn't look too bad.You say he has a broken collar bone, what about his concussion?.

Jan- Doctor what's the latest news on Leo?

Doctor J- Leo has been quite lucky really though he might not agree if the painkillers haven't kicked in by now.
His injuries are not life threatening which are a collapsed lung,a broken tibia, cracked ribs, and the dislocated collar bone.

Jan- You call that lucky?,goodness me I would hate to hear your account of being unlucky. What were you thinking of Leo going out without the proper equipment?.

Tom- Now then Jan he's semi conscious and doesn't seem to be registering what you are saying, take it easy on him.How long is he going to be in here Doc?.

Doctor J- Oh I think you are probably looking at between 3 and 4 weeks minimum we need to do a few more tests and established if there is any long term or lasting damage.

Jan- Such as what Doctor?

Doctor J- Well he will need an MRI scan,a neurological examination as there was a head impact what with him not wearing a protective helmet. There might be some permanent brain damage but that's for another day.If you don't mind I need to run along and catch up with my other patients.

Tom- Oh my lord this just gets better and better doesn't it Jan?,as if we didn't have enough to worry about with our business issues.

Meanwhile both Tom and Jan's mood improved when they noticed a friendly face had appeared on the ward and was making her way over to them. She smiled briefly at them before entering the room where Leo was lying.

Jan signalled to Tom that she was going for a coffee and asked if either he or her mum would like one.

Tom smiled and then stuck two fingers up at her to indicate the amount of sugar he would like with his coffee. He had hoped it might be possible to return back to work before nightfall as it was getting late. The visiting hours were almost up and all visitors would be asked to leave soon.

Meanwhile Jack was busy beavering away in the office and had a most unexpected visitor,it was Ken Charlery what did he want? thought Jack.

Jack- Hello Ken to what do I owe the pleasure of your company?

Ken- I was wondering if Tom was about I might be in a position to put some business your way but I'll need both of your signatures to draw up this contract and unique business opportunity.
It concerns the yard and Jan's fashion business.

Jack- Oh well that will have to keep for now,Tom wouldn't do anything underhand behind Jan's back and I can't quite see how I fit in to the scheme of things here Ken.

Ken- A little bird tells me you are up the creek without a paddle and desperately need some financial assistance that's where I come in.I'm prepared to buy 25% of your shares on the proviso that Tom sells me his 10% in the boutiques.

Jack- Oh haven't you heard Jan's boutiques have been put up for sale so you might be a bit late unless you want to buy one or several of them outright.

Ken- Yes ok I didn't know about that Jack thanks for that new piece of information, tadaaa !!!

Before Jack had time to draw his breath Ken was gone like the wind in to the night like a stalking bird of prey looking for his next victim.
Jack decided to call it a night by pouring himself a nice glass of whisky,he had given up all hope of seeing Tom again tonight.

Meanwhile back at the hospital Jan had asked Tom back for a late bit of supper along with a few night caps, would he accept her generous invitation?,you bet he would.

He was like a cat with two tales that had just been given the cream,he couldn't stop gazing in to Jan's eyes until finally he fell in to her grasp and they shared a smouldering kiss.

She then lent him her hand as he was lead up to the bedroom where they had shared so many previous romantic encounters.

The night would prove to be another passionate one as both of them rekindled their feelings for each other.
