Marion County, Kansas

September 14, 1951

They always seem to shine more in the fall, and I’m not sure why.

I stare up at billions of stars, mesmerized by their twinkle. It’s a beautiful night for looking at stars.

It’s cool, but not cold, and the slight breeze is just the right amount of wind.

The wheat is long gone, harvested and packed away, but I can still imagine the light rustling sound.

I can hear an owl in the distance, mixed with Sugar’s barking.

I close my eyes and just savor this moment, completely lost until I hear a noise behind me, and I jump.

My mother smiles at me and looks up at the stars. “I can see why you like it here so much.”

I nod and move closer to her. “It’s nice to be back.”

She pulls me closer. “Yes, it is,” she replies, and I realize she spent all summer without this, too.

A flashing light moves across the sky, and for a second, my heart skips. Another one? But, no, this is just a plane, and I sigh in relief.

Because even if they are real--especially if they are real--the idea of aliens is freaky. Who knows what they want?

I look up at my mom. Her eyes are on the stars, and she too is lost in their wonder.

I shove all alien thoughts away and focus on this instead. This moment where it’s just me, my mom, and the stars.
