The screams came from everywhere and nowhere at the same time. The streets were slick and puddled with blood from the dead and dying. The heavy, coppery smell was nauseating and was giving Raquelle a headache. She pressed one hand to her temple and another to her mouth to keep the bile in, but the running was taking its toll.

They killed her. They killed her. They killed her. It was the only thought in her mind.

She was running like she never had in her life--but she didn’t know from what. Er, she knew what, but she didn’t know where they were. Raquelle was running because it seemed the only thing to do in a scene like this. She leaped over the blood-soaked body of a woman, next to what she assumed was her own dying child. His eyes were glazed over, and his breath was just a whisper. Still, he maintained fierce eye contact. Raquelle’s heart squeezed. She wanted to save him, help him so bad… but there was no hope. He was dying, and it wouldn’t be more than a few hours before he was gone.

Nonetheless, that was a few more hours of suffering he didn’t deserve. She pulled her sword from its sheath and covered the boys eyes as she slit his throat. She felt the spray of blood, warm and sticky on her face. She put her sword back and kept running, feeling absolutely sick. She stopped in the middle of the street, and threw up. As she looked around, she realized she wasn’t the only one.

She thought she caught sight of him peripherally--but as the shock registered and she struggled to move, the adrenaline holding her like a rock, she wasn’t fast enough. She felt the burst of pain blossoming in her side, intensifying as he pulled out his sword and went to the next victim, leaving her in a bloody heap.  Raquelle looked around, trying to find something nice to look at for her last moments. She heard the sound of a horse galloping close to her, and she winced. This would be the thing that finished her off, getting smashed by a horse. But nothing ever stepped on her, and she stretched to look.

The horse just stood there, no rider in sight. Raquelle got an idea. She gathered every ounce of strength left in her body and sat up,  screaming from the effort. She grabbed the horse and pulled herself up, the blood from her wound dripping down the horse’s white fur. She gave the horse the command to go, figuring if she could just get out of the town, she could find a nice place to go.

The horse ran over people and broken things everywhere, making for a bumpy ride that not only hurt Raquelle but made her want to throw up. When the smell of blood was replaced with the smell of rain and grass, she knew they were far enough, and she commanded the horse to stop, falling off in a patch of weeds.

Raquelle curled up in a little ball, tears streaming down her face. She was going to die. It was only a matter of time. So she closed her eyes and let her world fade to a black and bloody blur.
