The Lighthouse Hotel chapter 5 -New and old acquaintances meet up on the eve of the grand opening
-
The following morning Tom and Leo decided to go for a brisk walk along the seashore near to the lighthouse hotel location.

The wind was calm and there was a lovely smell of sea salt in the air which was very pleasant on the lungs.

Tom was counting down the hours to when he would see Avril again, there was still some unfinished personal business between them.A Romance might be on the cards tonight if that old spark could be rekindled between them.

Leo was meanwhile beginning to fret about the impending meeting which had been arranged for midday.

He was sure that his father would not approve of him offering money to complete strangers without having them checked out and initiating a proper business plan before hand.

A cry from a distant seagull flying above them raised their concerns about the weather as these sea birds often flew inland when the heavens were about to open.

The hotel was now almost finished aside from a few brushes of paint here and there. The eve of the grand opening was fast approaching.

It was a nice thought of Tom to invite both of his closest friends Avril and Jack to the opening ceremony.

He had hoped that a few other members of the Solentville community might have accepted his invitation to the event.

Ken Charlery had indicated that he would make up his mind up on the day but he left his options open.

They arrived back at their temporary lodgings a short while later and both felt the need for a shower, there was still plenty of last minute tasks to perform like setting up the meeting room in the old lighthouse.

There were 4 small rooms within the lighthouse building which had been earmarked for the meeting room.

Eventually Tom decided to select a room called "The Night Star" as his preferred choice of location.

He quickly pushed 4 trestle tables together then boxed them off with  freshly ironed white linen sheets and placed a few pens, pads, flip chart and an overhead projector in the room.

He decided that there was no need to provide name badges or cards as this wasn't an official board meeting after all.

It was now approaching midday when Leo noticed a Rolls Royce car pull up at the front of the hotel,he didn't recognise any of the people who got out of the car and were now making their way to the hotel's entrance.

There followed a sharp knock at the front door, the bell had not yet been fitted, there was a plan in place to fit a revolving door for the hotel's main entrance.

-

Lovejoy- Good day to you sir,my name is Lovejoy, this is my associates Eric and Tinker will be joining us in a jiffy.I presume that your son has filled you in on why we are here today.

Tom-Yes he has,I'm very pleased to meet you won't you please come this way,I've made a few arrangements of my own.

Lovejoy- I heard about the opening of this new hotel in the local newspaper "The Dorchester Times".

Tom- Right gentlemen shall we all get down to business?,as you will appreciate we have had our hands full with this new hotel venture.

Leo mentioned something about a one of payment of a thousand pounds yesterday as part of the deal which would make him a partner in your business correct?.

My son had already established himself as an antiques dealer in Solentville and has been in the antiques business for a number of years. So what exactly do you need this one off payment for?.

Lovejoy- Well I appreciate what you are saying sir but with our business we must have a constant flow of capital in place so one has to speculate in order to accumulate. In other words in order to acquire the antiques one needs the money, that's the name of the game.

Leo- Yes I'm aware of that as I have been buying and selling antiques at auction rooms for a number of years.

Can you assure me that what I buy is mine and not the joint ownership of the other partners in the business?.

Lovejoy- My dear chap the idea is quite simple we are all part of joint cooperative, any profits made during the sales transactions will be equally shared between us,otherwise what is the point in you coming on board with us?.

Tom- Ok let's just iron out a few financial guarantees here,I'm happy to lend my son the money he needs in order to become a partner with your business on one condition.

Lovejoy- Name it !!!!

Tom- I am allowed to become a sleeping partner,I won't get involved in any of the buying and selling of antiques, but you do see I need to protect my sons interest here?.

Lovejoy- Ok it's a deal, now I think I could use a nice drop of scotch if you have any available.

Tom- Just give me a minute, perhaps you might like to take a tour of the lighthouse and our new hotel.

Lovejoy- No not right now sir but I would be happy to to come to the opening day if that's at all possible .

Lady Jane Harwood says that she knows you from her past and is anxious to make your acquaintance once again.

Tom- Really that names doesn't ring a bell with me,oh well Perhaps I might have built her a boat back in Solentville or maybe she might have known my late wife Jan who owned a chain of boutique shops.

Tinker- Now that's more like it cheers me dears, bottoms up,I say what a lovely drop of scotch.

Tom- Ok I think we have now covered everything here, right now to that down payment of a thousand pounds. Can I give you the money tomorrow Mr Lovejoy as I've got a lot on today what with the opening of the hotel being tomorrow?.

Lovejoy- It's just Lovejoy and yes that's ok with me,I'll see you at around the same time tomorrow then.Come on fellows it's time to get a real drink I'm gagging for a pint.

-

Silence fell upon the lighthouse hotel as Tom and Leo began to clock watch anxiously awaiting their guests to arrive.

It was now 1.30 pm,suddenly they both spotted a couple walking on the beach about 200 metres  from the hotel.

Tom reached for his binoculars and immediately recognised that it was Avril and her father Jack, perhaps they were just getting their bearings and sampling some of the local scenery.

Tom turned his attention to cleaning the kitchen area,it needed to be sanitised prior to the preparation of food for tonight's meal.

All of the kitchens equipment such as the inbuilt cookers, convectors, fridges, freezers needed to be inspected and pass the food and hygiene test in order to use them safely.

Leo decided to get changed in to something a little more comfortable and chose a marine sweater with a logo of The East Cowes Yacht Club attached to it.He also wore matching jeans.

Tom wasn't too concerned about his dress sense but just wanted everything to go smoothly tomorrow for the big launch of the hotel.

He had decided to ask if Avril would oversee the task of greeting the guests as they arrived at the  hotel's main entrance,he would also ask her to supervise all of the various staff members who would be in attendance.

Meanwhile it was now time to get reacquainted with his old friends as Jack and Avril had just arrived at the hotel.

-

Tom- Hello you two,it's great to see you both,Avril you look as stunning as ever and not a day over 40.

Avril- You cheeky so and so,you know I'm only 37 years of age, whoops !!!! a girl never gives her age away.

Jack- Ha ha,well it looks like you two are on to a real winner with this new hotel of yours Tom,it's truly stunning,if you ever need a hand you know where to come.

The boat building business is on it's knees back in Solentville there isn't any real future in building wooden boats anymore.

Tom-Then you will just have to diversify your business needs won't you Jack?.Anyway let's not talk about boats unless we are going to sail in one.

Avril- Now you're talking, where's the launch area?.

Tom- First things first as you will be aware we have been very busy with the hotel's preparations so some of the bedrooms might be a little stuffy and smell of paint or varnish right now.Are you sure we couldn't put you up in a local hotel tonight? it would be my treat.

Jack- Don't be daft we're in a hotel here,I'm sure the paint fumes can't be all that bad can they?.

Avril- Dad remember health and safety procedures we don't want to be ill or worse for Tom and Leo's big launch do we?.

Leo- Did someone mention my name?,hiya guys wow !!! you look terrific Avril but you might want to cover up those fluff lumps tomorrow. I hear there's going to be a rather nasty north easterly wind which might make for a chilly day.

Avril- Oh Leo you can't keep your eyes off them can you?.

Tom- Right folks shall we move on to the "Gimcrack" suite?,it' the centre piece of the hotel,I bought quite a few paintings of local artists just to provide the hotel with a regional theme what do you think?.

Jack- Yes I can see what you mean, blooming Ada it's like the national art gallery in here and look at all of these lighthouse pictures.

Avril- I say Tom could you show me the way to the ladies please as I need a twinkle.

Tom- Yes no problem, are you sure you don't want me to hold your hand whilst I'm taking you up there?.

Avril- No don't be silly now is it this way or that way?.

Leo- it's to the left of the main entrance up a couple of steps and then to your right you can't miss it.

Avril- Thanks Leo

-

The only outstanding detail which remained was to discuss what roles they were to perform tomorrow then they could catch up on old times.

It would be a night of nostalgia but the atmosphere would also be tainted with the sorrow that Jan and Lynn weren't there to share their enjoyment.

No doubt they would discuss the past experiences of their life and times within the Solentville community.
