Walls And Bridges

What is it with these man-made structures these days? Suddenly they seem to have become so in demand, at least in the world of politics, and in the minds of two ‘world leaders’.

First, we have Donald Trump and his wall. I’ve heard that some of it has been built, but it is more along the lines of a fence. In spite of hearing about it for what seems to have been forever, the ‘structure’ seems to be far from completion. I suspect that well before then, dismantling will be well under way.

Now I am hearing about an ‘ingenious’ plan of Boris Johnson’s. He has come up with an idea to solve the Irish back-stop problem. Apparently, he thinks that a bridge could be constructed between Northern Ireland and Scotland, thus making a physical connection to a part of the UK which is just that – apart!

If such a structure is possible, it will certainly take a lot of time to construct. And a lot of money. Also, the border issue would still remain. Even if he manages to connect the North to Scotland, the border will still remain to the Republic. Perhaps he also has plans to dig a trench, too. It wouldn’t surprise me.

Then, maps out, everyone, what about Donegal? Look at the position of it. Can anyone see how there could be a very big flaw in this plan? Donegal is a part of the Irish Republic. On the other hand, perhaps he, too, has plans about building a wall.

Another thing that needs to be taken into account concerns Scotland itself. There is growing support for the country to become independent. Should that happen, and Scotland opts to remain in the EU, the border crisis would be even worse.

Are we about to enter a phase where we can build our out of problems? In both these cases, I just can’t see it.
