Don’t Do That!

Walking past a mirror

I catch a fleeting sight

of my own reflection

which gives me no small fright.

I don’t want to be confronted

with my visage, not at all,

don’t need to be reminded

that in truth I’m pretty small.

The urge is very sudden;

I want to break the glass,

avoiding my reflection then

whenever I should pass.

My hand is stilled, it’s frozen

and my conscience, it is torn;

Don’t do that! It’s bad luck!”

that inner voice does warn.

I’ll leave the mirror standing,

superstition rules the day;

when I need to visit

I’ll just go another way.
