What is the meaning of life?

Disclaimer: This is an opinion of mine so please take it with a grain of salt and please understand where I am coming from, if you disagree, then I applaud you to let me know why.

Life is what we, as a society, associated with breathing and having our senses active. But most people all have their own interpretation, some believe it is having the freedom to do what you wish with it, some believe it is 42, some believe it is it is being capable of doing everyday activities and some believe life only begins when we are dead as this means we don’t have to deal with complications and adversities, instead, we get to live in heaven where peace is all is faced.

Life means different things to different people. Hence why I believe Life is ambiguous. Life is what we want it to be as an individual. It doesn’t have to be one thing but can be many things at the same time. Just like with words such as “staff” which means a person with a certain profession under an institution or a long stick.

Life is also vague and volatile. This means we can’t single it to one thing. As we go through life, we encounter velocity, this could be in jobs, meeting people, eating etc. One of the velocities we do occur which is inevitable is the change in our mentality. As we get older, we start to become more independent mentality as new connections are formed. This means we start making our own decision on different topics and it will usually be different from the last time we did so. As a result, our opinions on life will always change and will always be vague rather than we truly know what we want life to be.

Even with all of these, I still have a hypothesis for what the meaning of life is. But before I tell you, I will need you to know the definition of what it is.

“ serve a purpose, role, or function”

This is the definition of “serve”. This one word is done every day whether we know it or not. When we go and earn our paycheck, we have to serve a purpose which is to do our job criteria to fulfill that paycheck, when we want to drive a car, we have to serve the role of a driver, when we want to write an essay or article, we have to serve the role of the writer etc. Each action has to have someone serving something for it to be done. This is why I believe “to serve” is the true meaning of life as it is something that never changes, the only thing that changes is what is affected by it and how it is done.

Whenever we serve something, we usually get something back. When we serve the role of a writer, we get a piece of literature, when we serve the role of an employer, we get given an employee, money etc. When we serve those things repeatedly, we get more of those things as a result. For example, it takes 1 day to write a piece of literature, if we serve the role of a writer for a day, we shall get 1 piece of literature, but if we serve the role for a year, we shall get 365 pieces of literature. This is applicable to pretty much anything, the more money we put into a savings account, the more we get back, the bank serves the role of a bank and the more it serves that role, the more money it shall make. I hope you get where I am going with this.

Society tends to function better when something is being served. This could be in the form of filling the job role of a leader or a car serving as a mode of transport etc. But society function when something has a role to play, arguably, it functions better the more role is created. This can be through indirect or direct cases. Let’s look at homeless people. We as a society believe that people shouldn’t have to serve the role of homelessness but what about the charities that provide for these homeless people which have employees? Homelessness isn’t nice but there are employees who have a job because such a tragedy exists. So every role has a role to play (pun intended).

As explained before, every role that is being served is all linked together. A human plays the role of a driver who turns on the engine via the key whose role it is to start the engines and when the engines are turned on, it then activates the motor inside of the car which allows the tires to be able to move which then moves the car forward or backwards. As you can see, each object each have a role and they come together to form a function hence why serving things is done all the time by a range of different things.

There are 4 main areas where serving is done:

Religion

In religion, there is either polytheism or monotheism. But both have 1 similarity which is that there is usually some form of a higher power that the followers cater to. This isn’t applicable to all religion but the most commonly recognised do have these attributes. These religions tend to be known as Christianity, Judaism, Islam. Each of the followers has to serve these higher power or God by doing things like praying or going to their religious institutions etc. But as you can see, they are serving and that is essentially their meaning to life. Serving their God.

Employment

In employment, there are several roles or positions to fill. For example, A person can serve the role of an employer who then gives jobs to people to serve as an employee who then creates things that serve the role of making the business money who then serves the role of being invested into different department and areas. Each role in employment also has a purpose for those who fill them. A janitor cleans the vicinity. Shareholders relegate who should run the business and finance the operations through their initial investment etc.

Education

When it comes to education, it’s more about the long term effects, rather than the short term. This is because the information that is gained through education is meant to last us till the day we die. This is why when it comes to education, it is about serving several things. Serving our need for knowledge but also serving our need to be productive towards society and to participate in the competitiveness of life and win. Also, when it comes to institutions e.g. schools, the purpose that we serve is to get the best grades and essentially go to the best institutions that the world has to offer.

Abstract Objects

In life, there are things we need to be able to gain the things we want. It can be anything, it can be money, it can be time, it can be clothing etc. But the question is, how do we serve those things? Well, it’s by actively doing things for the purpose of gaining those things. We go to work so that we can gain money, but to do that, we have to sacrifice our time, hoping that we can invest that money so the money now serves us and we can use our time for the things that give pleasure. Therefore, our purpose is to obtain money in that scenario.

This hypothesis affects our lives every day. This is because everything in existence has a purpose or a role to play and when completed, it will ultimately affect something that is larger than the object itself. And each of these things serves each other, always having a prerequisite for the next role to play.

Conclusion

This is my hypothesis/argument for the meaning of life. Do you agree or disagree? Let me know.
