Lately, more and more posts have been appearing in my timeline with the word “authentic” - with people appreciating, discussing, dissecting, and finding new use of it every time. I saw people asking what is authentic, using it as a compliment, as a description ?

I noticed it so often that I urgently had to pen down my own interpretation and understanding of it, because it is one of my favorite words as well - as truthful, as unbreakable, as uniting and as relevant today as a word can get. ?

So what is authenticity?

?

You are walking through a field near a village where you grew up; you gaze into infinity and don’t wish to be anywhere else at that moment. These fields remind you of the backyard where you spent time as a child, or the person you used to love. That feeling is authentic to your heart

?

You are holding in your hands a framed autograph of your favorite cinema, music or sports star who, sadly, passed away fifty to sixty years ago. It is not a copy, but the real handwriting of ..... (name of your personal muse, angel or hero), an antique in our days. That is authentic

?

You walk up to somebody you respect, whether it’s from work or your field of studies, and shyly say: “I liked your performance today. You’ve done a phenomenal job”. You notice, besides the sunshine in her smile, enough to light up a whole auditorium, lines appearing in the corners of her eyes. You don’t know her that well, but you sure know she doesn’t smile that way when looking at her audience, or facing cameras. This is the way she smiles - outside of her professional skin. She narrows her smile and gives you a humble “Thank you.” This is authentic

?

You are reading about a Native American girl on her beloved homeland, and imagine the wind caressing her tar-black hair as she runs. Not knowing the details, you picture - and fall in love with - her dark, strangely wise for her age, naturally piercing eyes, rich eyebrows and beautifully wide cheekbones. This kind of beauty, very true to one’s origin, as well as the reminder of this world’s diversity is enough to force streams of waterworks from under your eyes. This is authenticity

?

What is AUTHENTICITY to you?
