a looming darkness that appears randomly. missing persons, pure mystery and a boy who has had the worst experiences due to this phenomenon. what is this darkness?

It's rare, to see a morning so dark. Dark to the point that all you see are the surrounding lights from the neighbors' houses. My mom always told me to never step foot outside on these days and being the obedient child that I was I always did as my mom asked. I always wondered what was blocking the sun, a dark cloud that sometimes gave a dark red glow for a while before going completely dark again. It was like having two nights in succession and, I found it cool. Whenever this event ended, in some parts of the town there would be missing persons and I never pieced it together, I mean I was twelve after all. My best friend Jason asked me once to actually go out into the dark one day, "it will be lots of fun" he said. Little did we know what we were getting into. At first, I was hesitant since I always listened to my mom since I knew she was looking out for me, I mean that’s what moms do right? I convinced him not to go out and we left it at that. But still, I can't say I wasn’t curious as to how it would feel. I've seen many eclipses in my life but this event was nothing like it at all, so the thought of going out still enticed me. Since I was so young, the factor that people were going missing was something I never really thought about. I didn’t understand it and I just though they ran away or something. No bodies were ever found so the police considered it a human trafficking situation. I guessed they thought that would keep the towns folk in check.

My sister Anna was a strong woman, I mean she had to be since she was 18 and almost twice my height. I always thought my big sister would be there to take care of me since that’s what big sisters do. Whenever I fell, whenever I was being bullied, my big sister would make everything better. Thought the day would never come when I would no longer have a big sister , but in life most good things come to an end. Jason was stubborn. He told me that he would go without me the next time the darkness came and he called me a scared little boy since I said I wasn’t going. I personally just wanted to listen to my mom but I didn't want to look like a  coward to my best friend. So it was decided, the next time the darkness came we would go out together and see what it feels like. The plan was to have him sleep over and go out when my parents fell asleep.

One day after school, out of nowhere the darkness came. This was a bit out of place since we had believed we had caught on to the times when it happens, the scientist to be exact. All children were still in the class rooms so everything was said to be ok by the teacher. And with that we waited it out. Normally it lasts a few hours but in this instance it lasted about one hour, which again was strange. As soon as the darkness cleared up we all went home and everything just seems like normal. At least that’s what I thought until I got home. As soon as I took that left turn to go home I saw an ambulance leaving the area and I wondered what had happened. It couldn’t have come from my house could it? I rushed through the door, my heart was racing wondering if something had happened to someone and, there they were sitting in the living room. Everyone was there, everyone except my big sister. Immediately I asked' mommy where's Anna?'. She replied; " oh Anna will be home in a few days her workplace has here doing some special work." At the age I was I just said ok but, Anna never came home after me for as long as I can remember. One day, two days, three days passed and Anna still never came home. I always asked mom" when's anna coming home?' Mom would always say" soon, she will be home soon. Soon seemed like forever for me and it had me a lot more worried since I heard the stories of  persons going missing in the dark.

I tried my best to keep the thought that my sister had been taken out of my head. If my memory serves me right, then I believe my family is the only family within the first 2 blocks of my neighborhood to not lose anyone. A few families became a bit paranoid sometimes suspecting this was being done by someone in the neighborhood and my family was targeted multiple times. Something changed their perspective, and mine when it came to that accusation. I came home from school one day to find my sisters shoes at the door. I was so excited seeing that shed finally come home so I ran through the door and into the living room and there she was. Although I was expecting to be happy, fear went down my spine. My sister arms had these long  marks on them. When I asked what had happened my sister said she was in an accident, which was believable. The problem with that explanation is type of marks, for a second I could have sworn they looked like claw marks. The way they were on her arm it looked as if something grabbed her and she struggled to get away, but our town doesn’t have those kind of large wild animals to leave marks that size.

Being that I hadn't seen her in so long I didn’t stay on it for too long, I was just happy to see her. Things went back to normal, except for that fact that my mom got even more strict on the idea of going into the darkness. She started giving me stories about monsters in the dark waiting to attack anyone who goes into it. She thought she was scaring me but she just peaked my interest in the darkness even more. I've never seen a real life monster before. I told Jason about what my mom and it also got him even more interested as well. He said ' for sure we are definitely gonna go see what's in there. Your mom says it’s a monster? How cool is that!" Looking back on that conversation it amazed me how utterly stupid we were when it came to how dangerous the situation actually was, and how we were treating it. I can remember that smile on his face and the excitement he had. I wish I could see it again.
