This was my entry to the first round of the NYC Midnight 250-word Microfiction Challenge 2019. We were given a random genre (romance), action (making a sandwich) and a word (fading) at midnight and had only 24-hours to write something. Although I didn't win the competition (after all, "there can be only one"), I liked it enough to share it.

“Please,” Jerome said softly, “make whatever you think I’ll like.”

They’d met at Sasha’s deli. He was unpredictable, interesting, not the kind of man to eat the same sandwich two days in a row. It was one of the things that had caught her attention. But now, standing in her kitchen, her hands fluttered over the counter uncertainly. What did he want?

“Jalapeños,” she nodded. “With shaved roast beef.”

“Hm, jalapeños I get,” he leaned in. “I love a bit of spice. Do I remind you of shaved beef?”

She reached up, patting his smooth cheek. “You did shave for our date.”

He laughed, warm molasses in winter.

“Hot mustard,” Sasha reached over his shoulder, her hand brushing past his dark hair, grabbing a fresh tomato picked from her garden. “Tomatoes, of course.”

She grabbed a knife, slicing open the juicy tomatoes, her fingers becoming sticky. “Sit down, I’ll bring it to you.”

He left, his footsteps fading, as she grabbed the sauce from the fridge and warmed it up in the microwave. She assembled the sandwich on rich brown bread, and brought it out on a red plate, the sauce waiting in a ramekin on the side.

“Gravy on top?” he looked up, surprise and amusement curling his lips. “Now that’s a sandwich. But it will have to wait.”

Jerome stood up, and moved towards her.

“You want dessert first?” Sasha laughed, nervous and off-kilter.

“Yes, please,” he leaned down and kissed her. Nothing had ever tasted so good.
