Status: In Progress  |  Genre: Romance  |  House: Booksie Classic

raley street, a middle-aged professor of egyptian history at a us university, becomes infatuated by a student as he tussles with the claustrophobia of a loveless marriage and a dull life. he is not helped by his philandering head of department, who is also his brother-in-law who has recently been sentenced to some time in therapy after a road-rage incident.
we meet raley at one of his lectures and immediately sense his boredom as his alter ego comes to life and taunts and berates him as he tries to continue his lecture. at the end of the lecture, we meet the subject of his affection, jenny summerleas, who invites him for a drink, which he declines. his head of department and brother-in-law (he is married to raley’s sister), doug jenkins, with whom raley has a hot/cold relationship, ridicules raley for his unwillingness to play the field, even though raley is married. we also learn that doug has had an affair and that he has been sent to therapy by a court for a road range incident in which he threw roadkill at another driver.
raley and doug go for a drink at benny’s, a local student hangout, at which doug reveals that he and raley’s sister are to divorce. raley also meets jenny summerleas at benny’s. after doug leaves, they chat, but nothing happens, though not necessarily against raley’s wishes.
the next day, raley is in the shower when he finds a pregnancy test stick in the bathroom waste basket. his conclusion? his wife is having an affair. he hires a detective to follow his wife, who deduces that she is having an affair with a younger woman and that raley’s wife was inseminated by a donor, a young man the detective saw her meet at a coffee shop. raley’s wife intends to leave him for this other woman.
this drives raley closer to jenny, partly out of revenge against his wife, partly because he believes himself to be in love with her and partly because he now feels alienated and alone.
the detective was wrong. it is raley’s daughter that is pregnant, the young man was her lover and raley was not told because he was likely to go off the deep end.
raley does not have an affair with jenny and at the end there is the beginning of a resolution with his wife, but only a beginning.
the essence of the story is love and fidelity and whether it is raley that needs to change or those about him, a struggle told with humour and compassion, but it is also about a set of individuals who have lost touch with those that matter to them in the real world and have been forced to create other identities in order to create a false sense of happiness.

This is scene setting. It starts when Raley, the main character, is a kid in America and gives the reader a clue as to his somewhat...distracted character. After that short intro, we see Raley 38
years later teaching Egyptian History at an American university and establish his relationship with the world and himself.
