The Reluctant ‘Secret Santa’.

Oh, come on, Ken! Where’s your Christmas spirit?” Bella stepped away from her boyfriend’s outstretched arms. “Everyone else is going to take part, you know. I really don’t want to be the one that is viewed as dating the office Scrooge.”

Ken let his hands fall down by his sides. His entire posture spoke of defeat. “Okay. You win, but I’d better not pick Jasper.”

Stepping towards him, Bella reached out a finger and lifted his head up before she planted a kiss on the tip of his nose. “Thank you, Ken. I knew you wouldn’t let me down.”

The following afternoon Bella wrote out a list of the names of everyone in the office. No matter how many hours they worked, no matter what their role, she was determined to include everyone. Once she was sure that she had not missed anyone she carefully cut out the names, folding the scraps of paper several times to ensure that there could be no cheating.

Ken watched as she made her way around the office, shaking the box that she had put all the pieces of paper in before thrusting it out to each of their colleagues. Some glanced at the names straight away, while others slipped the paper into their pockets for later perusal. It was those that did not look that left him feeling frustrated, for those that looked seemed to make a tiny give-away glance towards another.

He kept on watching until finally Ben glanced at the boss’s closed door. Ken gave a sigh of relief; he had dreaded pulling out Jasper’s name. None of the others would be so hard to buy for, would they?

Bella held the box out in front of him at last. There were not many folded scraps left but he still let his fingers sift through them before finally pulling a piece of paper from the box. It would be too much to expect Bella’s name to be there, he knew; but maybe Mona or Paul. He was tempted to wait until later to look but he could see his girlfriend watching him, urging him to take a look.

Ken shrugged and unravelled the paper. Cuthbert! He had thought that none would be as bad as his boss, but he had been so wrong.

How did the cat know? For when he looked over to the cushioned window seat, the cat’s eyes met his own as he casually licked at a paw.

Jasper’s pet, the cat who had everything; what on earth could he buy for him?
