Overwhelmed

So many bright lights

that flicker,

that hum,

that cause a distraction,

that pull at my mind.

The music gets loud,

there’s a thudding beat

that makes me want

to make a hasty

retreat.

But it’s the talking,

the chatter,

that assaults my ears,

as I get pushed

and jostled

bringing tears to my eyes.

I want to curl up small,

into a ball,

drop down to the ground and

retreat from this all!

My fingers itch

to cover my ears;

the lights dim and brighten

in front of my eyes.

Get out!

Get Out!

My mind is in panic.

A scream is building,

has to be held in

and silenced.

The trolley is half-filled

as I turn away,

seek out the exit

as once more

the bombardment

has led to sensory over-load

and I’ve left

empty handed

because I have become

overwhelmed.
