The Garden Plot

She opens the door and steps outside. She walks with a wibble and a wobble for her gait in unsteady, but that will not hold her back from heading to her plot of land.

She puffs and pants, pauses and then takes a steadying breath. Only then does she continue in her determined steps, along that path towards the little garden where something strange is growing.

She’s not quite sure what it is that is taking shape there. No one is. It is a mystery. But she is a gardener and she takes her responsibilities to heart. To bring to fruition is her art. No effort is to much.

The sky up above is cerulean blue; the sun an orange/yellow picture-book disc. Little puffy clouds of white are drifting about. There’s no arguing, not the slightest of doubt; it really is a gorgeous summer’s day.

And there they are!

There’s no underground nourishment, but instead there’s solar-powered flourishment. She bends and stoops and peers at each. No signs are there of any hatching; there is not so much as a hairline crack.

Reaching into her pocket, her arthritic fingers fumble until they find the cake and begin to crumble. Honey cake for the butterfly fairies that flutter up, flitter round to capture the crumbs, to eat and to savor, before returning to their positions as under-gardeners and egg-tenders.

There in the air as they acknowledge the old woman’s dedication to their care.

Job now done, the gentle gardener, stands with a creak then trudges back along the path towards her home. Her mind is light, her heart is strong for she knows that in her garden plot, what it is that is growing is something truly magical.

In a story as magical as this, Hully, something wonderful will surely hatch, but in your stories, one can never be sure.
