There are more than 900 billion ants on Earth. They are everywhere, and they dominate the planet with their huge numbers.Luckily for us,they live mostly underground. All this started a long time ago when five friends decided to travel to mount Sinai to find God...but not all of them made it.

A long time ago, before the humans were born, five animals lived on Earth, the dog, the fox, the rabbit, the mouse, and the ant. They were good friends, but unfortunately, each one of them wanted to rule the Earth.

‘’I am the stronger animal’’, said the dog,’’ and I  must be the ruler’’.

‘’No ‘’, said the fox, ''I must be the ruler because I am a cunning animal’’.

‘’You are strong and cunning, but I am faster’’, said the rabbit,'' I must be the ruler’’.

‘’You are strong, cunning, and fast, but I am smarter,’’ said the mouse, ''I must be the ruler’’.

The ant didn’t speak. Because of its small size, nobody saw him as a candidate. The dispute went long, and since the five friends didn’t want to fight with each other, they decided to travel to Mount Sinai , find God and ask him to appoint one of them as a ruler. The dog, the fox, the rabbit, and the mouse took no food with them, while the ant took five beans. All day they traveled, and when night fell, they found a nice place and went to sleep. But the rabbit couldn’t sleep. He was too hungry. Meanwhile, the ant nearby was chewing a bean.

‘’I am starving’’, said the rabbit, ''if I don’t eat something I will die, and one of my friends will become the ruler. I have no other choice. I must eat one of my friends’’.

Since the dog was too big, the fox to cunning, and the ant to small to feed him, he ate the mouse. In the morning, when the other friends woke up, they searched for the mouse, but they didn’t find him.

‘’What happened to the mouse?’’, said the dog.

‘’He must have returned home’’, said the fox.

‘’That traitor’’, said the rabbit.

Although the ant had seen everything, he didn’t speak. The second night, the dog and the rabbit fell asleep, while the fox couldn’t. He was hungry. The ant nearby was chewing a bean.

‘’I’m starving to death’’, said the fox’’, If I don’t find something to eat, I will die, and one of my friends will become the ruler. I have no choice, I must eat one of my friends’’.

Since the dog was too big, and the ant to small, he ate the rabbit. The next day, when the dog woke up, he saw that the rabbit had disappeared.

‘’What happened  to the rabbit?’’, said the dog

‘’He must have run away’’, said the fox.

‘’That coward’’, said the dog.

The ant knew everything, but he didn’t speak. On the third night, the dog got hungry, and he couldn’t sleep, while the ant, as usual, was eating a bean.

‘’If I don’t find something to eat’’, said the dog,’ ’I will die from hunger, and the fox will become the ruler. I have no other choice, I must eat the fox’’.

And so the dog ate the fox. The ant saw everything, but he didn’t speak. When the fourth night came, the dog became hungry again, and he decided to eat the ant, but the ant hide underground. The dog started digging, hoping to find the ant, but the ant open a tunnel and slipped behind the dog. Meanwhile, the dog kept digging and digging, and he made a hole so deep, that now he couldn’t get out of there.

‘’If only my friends were here’’, said the dog,’’ they would have helped me’’.

Suddenly he saw the little ant at the entrance of the hole, and he barked him for help, but the ant didn’t speak. He simply turned his back on the dog, and continued his journey. When he arrived at Mount Sinai, God appeared in front of him.

‘’You were five when you started the journey’’, said God,’’ and now it's only you. Where are the other four?’’

The ant told him the whole story.

‘’You are the fittest, little ant’’, said God,’’ you survived, and as a reward, from now on, you will rule the Earth. But, because you didn’t speak when your friends were slaughtered, and you abandoned the dog in the hole, from now on you will dig holes for eternity, as a punishment. You will live inside them in darkness, and in darkness you will dye. Go now, little ant and remember that if you set a trap for others you will get caught in it yourself’’.

And from that day the ants multiplied in huge numbers, became the rulers of the Earth, and they lived on their holes for eternity.

Life would be so much better if we humans would simply live as friends instead of trying to rule over each other.

Hmm that Ant sounds like a human seeing something but not saying anything to anyone.

You are right niah, that ant thinks like a human being. It is the personification of the underestimated politician ,who nobody takes seriously, but is he who wins in the end.Such was Joseph Stalin, for example,a little ant,a small sized person,a narrow minded ,one that nobody took seriously. But ,he triumphed in the end,and he slaughtered all his friends.

This was an excellent story. I can see it as a picture book even. You have witty characters, yet- as many have commented here- you have a symbolic story as well. I look forward to reading more of your work!
