Sugar-Soaping

I’m not sure how it happened,

perhaps soap-suds are to blame

for the self-delusional bubble

I’ve let myself inhabit.

Like all things so flimsy,

so full of air

it was inevitable that the time would come

when someone would make it go

POP!

Now I’m left unprotected

until I quickly build a wall,

one hundred feet tall and six feet wide

behind which I’m going to place

my heart and mind.

I’m tired of pretending,

sick of the falsity of dreams

that lie to me and sugar-soak anxieties.

I’ve taken those lenses from in front of my eyes

and I’ve shattered them to smithereens

along with all the hopes,

the dreams.

Time to grow up and face reality,

and the fact that I am

very much

alone.
