Addison Walker, the eco-activist with the steamy mugshot, is fresh out of prison for a crime he didn't commit, but would have. On his way back to Denver, his Greyhound bus stops in the middle of the desert for Casten Hartwell, the young runaway in the midst of escaping her job at a spiritual retreat center after a near-death experience.

He takes her under his wing after she helps him in a way he doesn't see coming, and soon they're both heading north. At first their destinations are different, but as the trip progresses the truth about where Addison is really going is revealed. Deep in the Green Mountains, on a beautiful farm with a dark past, Addison's brother is waiting. A controversial experiment will be taking place here over a two year period, led by a retired professor secretly obsessed with the afterlife. The payoff could be huge for everyone involved, but the dangers are real, hence its secrecy. Unafraid, Casten wants in.

Guided by a book that describes a future different to the one this world promises, the experiment draws in young people looking for a second chance. But the past never stays buried for long, and, with the arrival of two unexpected guests, some members learn they might be in way deeper than they thought, as ideas of right and wrong fade in the light of extremism.
