I was a sour and bitter body filled with burnt bones and a caged skull.

The fire lapped at my skin.

My skin was flush with heat, the scorch an angry blush that made me burn. It felt as though the sun was in my stomach, the flames in my throat and the candle wax in my veins. Seeping like the tears in my eyes and the rain off a tilted leaf.

I felt dizzy, intoxicated by the smoke and the gas that left a tangy feeling on my tongue. I was a sour and bitter body filled with burnt bones and a caged skull. A brain isolated by thin skin and a figure captured by the red, orange and yellow fire that orbited around me, lurking and teasing. My lips were dry and chapped, and my mind was melting.

I breathed in, the toxins lurching into my lungs and forcing a raspy cough from me. I lifted my hand to my mouth and retched hollowly, my eyes staring up at the roof with unfocused vision.

I tried so hard to move, to think, to do anything. But I couldn’t move with the heat. I was plastered to the ground, my sweat blending me to it in an unforgivable clutch.

So, I let it take me, and for a moment I was heavy. Weighing down on the fire, my skin blistered and my eyes watering. The sun stared down at me, and I wondered if it was glaring or beaming, it’s white glow making me tilt my head to the right to see the snarling flames that licked at my skin, dancing in a torturous glee. I exhaled a puff of oxygen, snapping my eyes closed in discomfort, my eardrums plummeting and my bones creaking, the ground below me falling and giving way.

I landed in air, the fire crackling and singing its ancient ritual to me, bloody and cruel in a sacred way. And when I drifted, I pondered if I had grown wings.

Or was it horns?
