Two bulky horses were dragging a wooden, topless carriage through the dead of night. The horses galloped through a dirt road and to each side was a dense blanket of tall, twisting trees. The rider of the carriage was a shady old man who covered his face in black rags and was furiously snapping on the reigns. Sitting inside the carriage were three men, exchanging loud words and sharp glances at one another. They were equipped head to toe with tight, leather armor, fingerless gloves and brown hoods. One man was spinning a small dagger between his fingers. Another had a small brown bag sitting on his lap.

“Will this be enough?” The man with the small bag said.

“It’s enough,” The man sitting next to him said. His right eye was drooping, and his eyebrow was scarred.

“Boys, this will set The Knives up for the better. Ghirland will have to initiate us after this job,” The man with the knife said, never breaking his sight of the dagger.

The man with the bag pulled something out and he dangled a gold chained necklace with a jade green jewel at the end of it, surrounded by small white diamonds.

“A beaut, isn’t she?” The man with the necklace said.

“You should put that away Dirk, you are riding with two other thieves you know,” The dagger man said smiling, still concentrating on his spinning blade.

“And I will not hesitate to cut your wrist to get it,” The scarred man added, jokingly.

The dagger man finally looked up with a smile and stared at the two thieves in front of him. The scarred man was looking at the back of the carriage blankly and Dirk, a big oaf, was staring back at him.

“Somethings the matter, Gower?” Dirk said.

Gower stopped spinning his dagger and said quietly, “You ever wonder why rats are found everywhere you look? No matter where you are? They’re like roaches, every time you think you’ve killed them all, more pop up.”

“What’s this about rats, Gower?” The scarred man asked, cross armed.

“Nothing really. Was merely saying that rats are everywhere, even if you can’t see them. You just need to know where to look and sometimes...” Gower, in one single motion, thrusted his dagger towards Dirk’s throat and Dirk grunted sharply, his airway quickly filling up with blood. Dirk clawed at his neck pitifully. The scarred man got up as fast as he could and drew a short sword from his waist, but Gower’s dagger was much quicker, and the dagger bit the scarred man’s chest before he can react. The scarred man let go of his sword in a painful scream. “Sometimes, the rats are right in front of you.”

“You decided to.... betray us now...?” The scarred man forcibly said, feeling the cold steel plunged near his armpit. Dirk was slumped in his seat motionless. He was loosely grasping the necklace.

“This isn’t a personal matter. You two were at the wrong place, wrong time. I would say my apologies but, that’s not something a thief would do.” Gower had a wry smile as he twisted the dagger inside the scarred man’s flesh and the scarred man screamed out terribly. “Never trust thieves with your lives. They don’t work well with people.” Gower took out the dagger and the scarred man fell unto a small pool of his blood, choking. “Don’t look so down, I’ll be with you soon, friend!” Gower put away his dagger and screamed out at the driver, “Drop me off at the nearest town, old man!”

Gower kicked the scarred man’s body off the carriage and snatched the gold necklace off of Dirk’s bloody hands. He shuffled Dirk to the edge of the carriage and caressed his face, before throwing him off in one powerful heave. Their bodies were swallowed by the still night and the dust kicked up by the horses had made them disappear, forgotten.
